EUGENE, Ore. – The Penn State men’s basketball team suffered an 83-72 road loss at Oregon Saturday afternoon inside Matthew Knight Arena.
Three-point shooting proved to be a key difference as Oregon finished the game 14-for-27 (51.9%) from deep and the Nittany Lions were 6-for-21 (28.6%).
Freshman guard Kayden Mingo finished with a game-high and career high-tying 24 points behind a 9-for-13 showing from the field. Josh Reed followed with 13 points, while Freddie Dilione V chipped in 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams started the game a combined 4-for-14 from the field as Oregon owned a 6-4 edge at the first media timeout.
- Five points from Kayden Mingo and strong free throw shooting helped Penn State comprise an 11-2 run over the next two minutes as the Nittany Lions surged ahead 15-8 with 13:32 left on the first-half clock.
- Oregon’s Dezdrick Lindsay answered with the game’s next eight points to put the Ducks back in front 16-15 at 11:16. Four points from Mingo fueled a 6-0 streak for the Nittany Lions, but the Ducks’ Nate Bittle responded with back-to-back triples as the Ducks held a 22-21 edge with 8:18 left.
- The back-to-back Bittle 3-pointers served as the front end of a 13-2 Oregon streak that pushed the Ducks’ lead to six at 29-23 with 6:08 remaining in the opening term.
- The Nittany Lions were able to pull within three following an Eli Rice triple that put the score at 31-28, but Oregon tallied the next seven to pull ahead by double digits at 38-28 with 1:56 left on the first-half clock.
- A Mingo jumper and Ivan Jurić layup ended the half as the Nittany Lions trimmed the Oregon lead to 38-32 heading into the break.
- Freddie Dilione V hit a mid-range jumper and Josh Reed followed with a pair of free throws to open the second half as the Nittany Lions quickly found themselves back within two points at 38-36 less than a minute into the term.
- The Ducks stayed hot from deep to extend their lead back to six at 44-38 a minute later but a pair of Dominick Stewart triples bookended an 8-2 Penn State stretch over the next three minutes that knotted the score at 46-46 with 15:42 to play.
- Oregon scored the next six points to re-take a six-point lead at 52-46. A Mingo trey at 13:34 had Penn State within three points, but the Ducks scored 10 of the game’s next 12 to put their advantage back in double digits at 62-51 with 9:53 left on the clock.
- The Nittany Lions wouldn’t get closer than seven the rest of the way as Oregon kept Penn State at bay to capture the 83-72 home win.
GAME NOTES
- Oregon improved to 9-16 overall and 2-12 in Big Ten play, while Penn State falls to 11-15 on the season and 2-13 in conference action.
- The Ducks finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (24-48) from the field and 51.9 percent (14-27) from 3-point range, compared to Penn State’s marks of 41.8 FG% (23-55) and 28.6 3FG% (6-21).
- Kayden Mingo tallied his 17th double-digit scoring effort and third 20-plus point game of the season with his career high-tying 24 points. It marked a Big Ten career-best for the rookie.
- Josh Reed finished with 13 points, marking his 10th-straight double-digit scoring performance. Reed was 8-for-10 from the free throw line
- Freddie Dilione V tallied his team-best 20th double-digit game of the season with his 10 points.
