Handal Roban and Hayley Kitching Break Program Records on Saturday Night

The duo both ran top three NCAA all-time 800-meter times.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State track & field wrapped up competition in their last indoor split-squad week on Saturday with several historic finishes.

Both 800-meter program records were broken by their current record holders, Hayley Kitching and Handal Roban.

Kitching competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle, winning the event with a personal best 1:59.22. The senior also ran the third fastest all conditions NCAA time ever with the result.

Handal Roban ran at the Asics Sound Invite in the 800-meter invite, coming in second among a group of professional athletes. His 1:44.73 is the new Penn State program record and the second fastest NCAA time ever in the event.

Earlier in the day, Elizabeth Schreiber moved into the top three in program history in the triple jump with a 43-0.5 (13.12) at the Tyson Invitational, finishing sixth in the event. Staying in Arkansas, Dylan Lambrecht improved upon his own mark at fifth in program history with a throw of 64-0.25 (19.51).  

To end the day at the Tyson Invitational, the foursome of Jake Palermo, Niko Schultz, Matt DeMatteo, and Peyton Summers moved into seventh in program history in the 4x400m relay. The group finished sixth in the event.

Ending the events in Seattle, Ada Rand and Lea Hatcher each ran top 10 marks in program history in the mile. Rand moved into the top three, running a 4.33.38, improving from her spot at fifth previously. Hatcher jumped into the top 10 with her time of 4:35.84.

EVENT RESULTS

In the Tyson Invitational, the Nittany Lions had some strong results in the field events. Gwen Cudmore and Hannah Riolo tied for fifth in the women’s high jump, both jumping 5-7.0 (1.70m).

On the men’s side of the high jump, Tripp Campbell finished eighth in the event with a jump of 6-11 (2.11m). Heading to the throws, Skye Petrie Cameron finished 11th in the shot put with a throw of 49-10.5 (15.20) while Sasha Garnett finished 16th with a 48-1.75 (14.67m).

Ending the day in Boston, Charlotte Costich led a group of four in the women’s 5K with a 16:06.46, followed by Claire Daniels with a 16:21.24, Claire Zubey with a 16:27.10 and Eva Kynaston with a 16:53.57.
