McKenna paced Penn State to a weekend sweep of Ohio State with a national best 10 points on two goals and eight assists. The rookie set program records with eight points and seven assists in an 11-4 victory on Friday night helping the Nittany Lions to their most goals scored in a Big Ten game all-time and tying the overall single-game program record for goals.
Five of McKenna’s seven assists were primary assists while the eight points are the most in an NCAA Division I game since 1987 and the seven assists are the most in a game since 1983 and the most-ever by an individual on a Big Ten team both pre and post league inception.
The eight points and seven assists are also the most in a single-game all-time in the 13 years of the Big Ten Hockey Conference.
McKenna added his second multi-point effort of the weekend and his 12th of the season on Saturday with one assist to go along with the overtime game-winning goal in a 5-4 victory.
The freshman is now tied for the Big Ten scoring lead with 33 points (10G, 23A) in 20 league games while his 43 points are the second-most all-time by a Nittany Lion freshman, just four shy of Denis Smirnov’s ’20 program record of 47 and are also tied with Evan Barratt for the fourth-most in a single-season all time. McKenna’s 30 assists this season are second in the Big Ten and tied for third in the nation and also tie Aiden Fink’s single-season program record from last season.
McKenna now leads all freshman in the Big Ten with 43 points on the season to rank second in the nation among first-year players and tied for fifth overall.
