QUICK HITS

The Nittany Lions return to action following a 2-2 weekend of performances at the Hokie Invite last Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7. Penn State opened the event with a dominant 15-4 win over the Radford Highlanders in five innings of play and followed that up with an 8-3 victory against the Boston College Eagles in a rematch of an opening-day contest from February 6. PSU followed that up with narrow defeats at the hands of Sun Belt rival James Madison, as well as then-No. 11 Virginia Tech. On the diamond, Penn State is anchored by the breakout efforts of freshman third baseman Allison Oneacre, who was recently regarded as the top-ranked player at her position in Division I by Softball America. Oneacre leads PSU in batting average with a .394 mark, in addition to home runs with 10 and RBI with 37. The Blue & White have called on a balanced approach in the circle to book their early-season results, with all five pitchers on staff throwing between 29.0 and 34.0 innings while clocking the third-best ERA in the Big Ten Conference and 21st-best mark nationally with a 2.47 tally.

AN RPI CONVERSATION

The first NCAA Division I Softball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) of the 2026 season were released on Monday morning, March 9, with the Nittany Lions coming in at the No. 43 position nationally. Penn State ranked as the seventh-highest rated team in the Big Ten Conference behind Nebraska (#3), UCLA (#6), Oregon (#17), Washington (#21), Michigan (#32) and Purdue (#38). The RPI is one of the most critical tools in evaluating NCAA softball programs for selection to the 64-team national postseason field, with the system ranking teams based on wins, losses and strength of schedule. RPI is formulated by including a team’s winning percentage, the winning percentage of the team’s opponents, and the winning percentage of the team’s opponent’s opponents. In addition to the RPI, the NCAA selection committee is able to utilize other rankings and ratings, including the KPI and Massey Ratings. PSU ranks as the No. 36 team nationally per Massey. The Big Ten Conference currently stands as the No. 4 ranked conference in college softball per the NCAA’s season-opening RPI, with the Nittany Lions joining seven teams in the top 50 and 14 total teams inside the top 100.

Introducing Oregon State

ABOUT THE BEAVERS

Under the guidance of 14-year head coaching veteran Laura Berg, the Oregon State Beavers prepare for a midweek matchup against PSU following a 10-17 overall start to the 2026 campaign. OSU has struggled as of late, with the Beavers dropping nine of their last 10 contests, ending a losing streak with a definitive 8-0 win over the Sacramento State Hornets in six innings of play on Sunday, March 8. The Beavers enter the midweek clash as the No. 101 rated team in college softball per the season-opening RPI from March 8, battling multiple competitive fields through the early going at the Judi Garman Classic, Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic and Judi Garman Classic. OSU’s signature win of the non-conference season to date came against Nevada in 4-2 fashion on February 19 at Mary Nutter. Oregon State has been paced offensively by a trio of routine starters hitting above .380, with junior infielder Jaeya Butler leading the way with an astronomical .426 batting average coupled with a 1.440 OPS. Butler also leads the team in home runs with 14, and RBI with 36, while teammates Camrynn Gordon (.386) and Mya Harrison (.380) have booked impressive starts to the season in their own right. In the circle, Oregon State maintains the seventh-best ERA in the West Coast Conference and 198th mark nationally with a 5.27 clip. Freshman staff ace Bailey Murray has stepped up for OSU, leading the roster in appearances (23), ERA (4.23) and saves (two), while Amelia Streuber leads the team in innings (62.0) and wins (five).

STORY OF THE SERIES

Penn State and Oregon State prepare for their sixth all-time meeting in each program’s respective history this week in Corvallis, with the Beavers boasting a 5-0 record through the last six contests. The teams first met back in the 2000 season, with Oregon State taking a pair of close contests in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Wednesday night’s fixture marks the first game played between Penn State and Oregon State on either college’s respective campus, with all five prior matchups taking place in neutral venues. PSU played OSU twice in Las Cruces, New Mexico, back in 2000, with additional tests coming in Columbus, Georgia, Cathedral City, California, and Tempe, Arizona, in 2002, 2007 and 2014, respectively. The last game between Penn State and Oregon State on the diamond took place on opening day of the 2014 season at the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by Arizona State. The teams battled back and forth, with PSU leading by as many as six in the top of the second inning, but the Beavers were able to come back and record a 12-10 victory.
