Penn State Women’s Fencing Completes First Day of National Fencing Championships

The Nittany Lions will continue competition at the NCAA National Fencing Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s fencing team finished the first day of competition at the NCAA National Fencing Championships in South Bend, In. at the University of Notre Dame. The first day of competition consisted of the first three rounds of pool play between all three women’s weapons. 

WOMEN’S EPEE  

Representing the women’s epee team, Sophomore Allegra Cristofoletto competed in the first round of competition at the National Fencing Championships.  

In the first round of women’s epee pools, Cristofoletto finished 4-3 with 21 total touches and secured multiple 5-touch bouts. 

The second round of pool play saw Cristofoletto go 2-2, recording 12 touches and a 5-touch bout win.  

In the last round of pool play, Cristofoletto earned one win, recording 14 touches and a 5-touch bout win.  

WOMEN’S FOIL 

Senior Sam Catantan represents the Penn State women’s foil team. In the first round of pool play, Catantan finished with a 5-2 record with 30 total touches and secured multiple 5-touch bouts.  

Catantan secured a 3-1 record in the second round of pool play, recording 19 touches and multiple 5-touch bout wins.  

The final round of pool play on day one of the championships saw Catantan earn a 3-1 record, scoring 13 touches and recording multiple 5-touch bout wins. 

WOMEN’S SABER 

For the women’s saber team, junior Eunyu Kim fenced to a 5-2 record in the first round of pool play. Kim scored 31 touches with several 5-touch bout wins.  

Kim didn’t earn any wins in the second round of pool play but earned 3 wins in the final round of the first day of competition, scoring 17 touches.  

NEXT UP 

Penn State continues to compete in the NCAA National Fencing Championships with the last day of women’s competition on Friday, March 20 in South Bend, In. at the University of Notre Dame. Competition on the strips begins at 9 a.m.
