No. 21 Penn State Falls to No. 6 Michigan on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 21 Penn State Nittany Lions (9-2, 1-1 Big Ten) fell to the No. 6-ranked Michigan Wolverines (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten), 11-6, on Sunday afternoon at Panzer Stadium. Penn State celebrated its seven seniors – Lauren Tinson, Erika Ho, Maggie Driver, Payton Wainman, Emma Kelly, Maddie Greco and Emily Bette – after the game.

KEY PERFORMANCES

FIRST QUARTER

Penn State secured the opening possession, but the Wolverines’ defense held strong and the Michigan offense strung together 3 goals early on. Penn State then obtained the ball to score their first goal of the game by Wainman scoring off a rebound with a quick stick goal. Less than a minute later, MacKinney was able to score her first goal of the afternoon, with an assist from Radin. Michigan was able to close out the stanza with another goal, marking the score 4-2 at the end of the first.

SECOND QUARTER

The Wolverines continued the scoring run and put up five straight goals to start the second frame. MacKinney was able to break through the Wolverine defense with her second goal of the day off a beautiful pass from Radin. Kelly, the senior, was then able to weave through the Michigan defense for an unassisted goal on a woman-up situation, the only other unassisted goal by the Nittany Lions on the afternoon.

THIRD QUARTER

Michigan won the opening draw, but Penn State was able to hold Michigan scoreless for nearly 12 minutes, when Michigan scored in the third with about 2 minutes left. Michigan lead 10-4 at the end of the frame.

FOURTH QUARTER

Michigan scored the first goal of the fourth quarter. Minutes later, Penn State got possession of the ball, and scored, with a goal by Hannah Hoyt, and an assist by Radin. Penn State then took over possession from Michigan, scoring again, with Wainman cashing in an assist from MacKinney. Neither team’s defenses let up in the closing minutes and Michigan would end up victorious.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Penn State held Michigan scoreless for nearly 12 minutes in the third
  • Manning recorded her 300th career save with an eight save performance against the Wolverines
  • Wainman’s second goal pushed her past 30 goals this season. Prior to the season, she had scored 21 goals in her career.
  • Radin now has 50 points on the season with 15 goals and 35 assists. Her previous career total prior to the 2026 campaign was 19.
