Women's Golf Set for Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga.  – The Penn State women's golf team is back in action this weekend at the 54th-annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on March 28-30 hosted by the University of Georgia at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens

This is a new tournament for the Nittany Lions as they look to conquer the 16-team field at the par-72, 6,217-yard UGA Golf Course.

The event will feature three days of 18 holes with split tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday while Monday’s final round will feature an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with an awards ceremony to follow the conclusion of play.

THE FIELD

  • The event is one of the oldest sporting events in all of women’s college athletics beginning in 1973.
  • Penn State is one of three Big Ten teams as the Nittany Lions are joined down south by Indiana and Rutgers.
  • Florida Gulf Coast, High Point, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Old Dominion, Queens University of Charlotte, Alabama, South Alabama, Toldeo, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky and the host Bulldogs round out the 16-team field while South Carolina has sent individuals only to compete this weekend.
  • The Nittany Lions will be paired with High Point and Florida Gulf Coast for the opening round on Saturday with tee times between 8:32 a.m. – 9:08 a.m. off hole No. 10.

THE TEAM

  • Penn State’s Lineup remains consistent from its last event with freshman Audrey Lam pacing the way along with fellow freshmen Mara King and Lillian Guleserian while sophomores Hannah Rabb and Yaya Jiratthitinun round out the starting five.
  • Sophomore Lauren Thompstone slots back in as the individual and is making her first appearance of the spring competing as an individual after competing in three-of-four events back in the fall.
  • Lam, Rabb, Jiratthitinun and Guleserian have each competed in all seven events so far this season with Lam leading the way with a 72.10 stroke average and a pair of top-10 finishes.
  • Rabb isn’t far behind with a 72.70 stroke average while Thompstone, Jiratthitinun and King are neck and neck at 73.33, 73.35 and 73.36, respectively.

NEXT UP

Penn State is back on the course next week in Maryland at the Terrapin Invitational on April 5-6 for its final regular-season tune-up before the B1G Championships on April 24-26.
