No. 16 Penn State Heads to Columbus for Ohio State Quad

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 16 Penn State Nittany Lions are set to travel to Columbus, Ohio to take part in the Ohio State Quad on Sunday, March 8th at 2 p.m. The quad will be hosted by Ohio State and Penn State will compete alongside the Buckeyes, Eastern Michigan and NC State.

LAST TIME OUT

The Nittany Lions beat out No. 29-ranked Nebraska and No. 34-ranked Washington, falling just short of a sweep with a loss to No. 9-ranked Michigan. Finishing with a score of 197.225, the Blue and White had their second-highest total team score of the season and the fourth-highest team score in school history. 

The Nittany Lions had a huge day on the balance beam as the team had the third-highest beam score in school history with three gymnasts who surpassed their career-high score and one who matched it. Their team score was the highest they have had all season beating their previous score of 49.350. They also performed well on the vault, getting their highest team score of the season with a 49.200. Top performers of the meet were Ashley Maul and Dani Latronica, both gymnasts who beat personal records today.

The Ann Carr award, which is given each meet to the gymnast who gives the most inspirational performance, was given to Jessica Johanson who had three outstanding performances on floor, bars, and vault.

NATIONAL RANKINGS

Penn State jumped in the rankings entering the weekend, ranked as the 16th-ranked team in the country. The Blue & White have the 11th-ranked rotation nationally on bars and 16th on beam, the second best NQS for bars in the Big Ten and third on beam by those same metrics. The Nittany Lions are 23rd nationally on vault and 26th on the floor exercise.

Latronica leads Penn State’s bars routine with the 13th best score nationally. The Lake Worth native also found herself in the beam national rankings at 42nd in the NCAA and fourth and ninth in the Big Ten on bars and beam, respectively. Ava Cash joins Latronica in the uneven bars rankings at 32nd nationally and sixth in the Big Ten while Elizabeth Leary is 13th in the Big Ten on the same event.

Penn State currently has a team NQS of 196.468 while checking in with a vault NQS of 49.018, the team’s bars NQS being 49.232, the beam rotation at 49.136 and floor exercise at 49.136.
