UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 18 Penn State (11-3, 3-2 Big Ten) offense put together a balanced 29-point effort to propel the program past the Oregon Ducks (6-8, 0-6) in Panzer Stadium on Thursday night, 19-9.
The Nittany Lions offense was led by the trio of Kelly MacKinney, Delaney Radin and Rocquette Allen. MacKinney, the reigning IWLCA and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, tallied her second consecutive seven-plus point game. The New Jersey-native netted four goals, with two coming from the eight meter, while dishing out a trio of assists while shooting 67%. Radin secured her second career hat trick and added a pair of assists to put her at 44 on the year, the second-most in a single season in program history. Allen, the five-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree, tied her career-high with five goals to push past 50 points in her young career with a team-high 37 goals. Erika Ho notched back-to-back hat tricks while dishing out a helper to put her at four points. Payton Wainman and Emma Kelly each recorded a pair of goals while Kelly added an assist and dominated the draw circle with 15 victories in the circle, putting her at the century mark in her career.
FIRST QUARTER | PSU 5 - ORE 3
Oregon secured the initial possession, sending the offensive fleet down to the net and putting the Ducks on the board first. Penn State responded quickly with Allen netting the ball, assisted by MacKinney. The Ducks started off hot, but Penn State didn’t hesitate to cool them down. Allen scored her second goal of the first period, two minutes later. Radin jumped on the board, sailing the ball between Oregon’s defense for a free-position goal. After a few minutes of silence, Oregon closed the gap to one point. Kelly, the draw taker, fired a shot at the Ducks, reopening that gap with an unassisted goal. Forcing pressure on Penn State’s defense, Oregon pushed another goal through, chasing the one point deficit on the turf. Wainman closed out the first period on a high note, launching a free-position goal.
SECOND QUARTER | PSU 11 - ORE 5
Continuing a strong momentum, Wainman wasted no time, scoring her second goal of the game assisted by Radin. MacKinney shone her talent on the field, capitalizing on free-position opportunities and scoring back-to-back goals. Although a woman down, Penn State’s chemistry continued to shine through the duo of Maddie Greco and Allen collaborating for Allen’s third goal of the game. In similar fashion, MacKinney sent Radin a fastball, good to boost Penn State up seven points. Hawking down the net, Oregon found a pocket to post its first goal since the opening period. The Nittany Lions and Ducks toggled between possessions for minutes before MacKinney set Radin up for another goal. That assist was good to give MacKinney her 150th career point. Oregon sought an opportunity to take draw control, closing out the first half with five goals, trailing behind Penn State’s 11.
THIRD QUARTER | PSU 16 - ORE 7
Oregon began a strong offensive campaign against the Nittany Lions, scoring the first goal of the third frame. Marking up Penn State’s offense, Oregon was no match for MacKinney’s goal assisted by Ho. After a media timeout, a pairing of green cards gave Penn State a two-woman up advantage. Ho cleared the remaining Ducks and took a goal for herself off a free-position shot. The attacker wasn’t done yet, wearing down Oregon’s goalkeeper with a stellar shot to follow. A lone Duck goal drove Oregon to meet Penn State halfway, 14-7. Greco stepped up to the challenge again, putting the ball right in MacKinney's stick for a goal. Allen drew her stick high in the air, launching a rocket at the bottom corner of the net off an assist from Radin.
FOURTH QUARTER | PSU 19 - ORE 9
On a free-position shot, Ho netted a goal that bounced off both pipes and into the turf and propelled the Nittany Lions into a ten point lead, giving Ho a hat-trick. Oregon began making cuts in the deficit, posting two goals against the Nittany Lions. The Ducks returned to the net over three minutes later but were blocked by freshman goalie Makenna Gagliardi. Penn State stole possession, leading Kelly to divide Oregon’s defense and feed Allen her fifth goal of the game. Kelly couldn’t stay away and rode her momentum into collecting a hat-trick, assisted by Maggie Rezza. The duo closed out the frame, sending Penn State into its 11th win of the season.
