Baseball Falls In Series Finale At No. 19 Oregon

Nittany Lions host No. 12 West Virginia on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for Dollar Dog Night

EUGENE, Ore. – The Penn State baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision against No. 19 Oregon in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at PK Park. The Ducks broke a scoreless tie in the fourth were able to hold the Nittany Lions without a run through multiple scoring threats.

 

Penn State moved to 12-29 overall (5-16 Big Ten), while Oregon improved to 32-11 overall (15-6 Big Ten).

 

Isaiah Shayter earned the start for the Nittany Lions, tossing 3.2 innings. He allowed three runs on five hits. Shayter tallied five strikeouts and two walks. He held the Ducks scoreless through the first three innings and had multiple strikeouts in the second inning.

 

Kyle Emmons worked two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Emmons secured two strikeouts and walked one batter. Mason Horwat tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts. Dimond Loosli worked a scoreless eighth inning and struck out two.

 

Miles Gosztola made the start for the Ducks, firing 6.1 scoreless innings. He gave up three hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters. Gabe Howard recorded the final two outs of the seventh. Cooper Markham fired a scoreless inning and notched two strikeouts. Cooper Strawn worked one-third of an inning before Leo Uelmen got the final two outs of the ninth.

 

Penn State recorded five hits. Jayden Davis collected two singles. Michael Anderson, Kevin Karstetter and Maddox McDonald all added singles.

 

Jack Porter snapped his 16-game hit streak, tied for the 15th-longest hit streak in program history. Porter was hit by a pitch to extend his 31-game reached-base streak.

 

Oregon collected five runs on nine hits. Burke-Lee Mabeus went three-for-four with two doubles and a solo homer to drive in two runs. Drew Smith also had three hits, including a double and a solo homer, and two runs.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the top of the first, Jayden Davis started the game with a sharp grounder through the right side. Michael Anderson bounced a single through the middle to put runners on first and second. However, a pair of strikeouts and a groundout ended the inning without any Nittany Lion runs.

 

Oregon broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Leading off the inning, Drew Smith lined the first pitch he saw over the wall in left. Angel Laya bounced a single into left before Maddox Molony worked a four-pitch walk. Burke-Lee Mabeus landed a double in right to bring in Laya. Naulivou Lauaki lifted a sac fly to right to drive in Molony. The Ducks led 3-0.

 

The Ducks added a run in the fifth. With two outs, Smith smacked a double into the corner in right. Laya dribbled a single through the middle to bring in Smith. Oregon held a 4-0 advantage.

 

Oregon plated a run in the sixth. Leading off the inning, Mabeus launched a fly ball that stayed inside the foul pole as it went over the wall in right. Oregon pushed its lead to 5-0.

 

In the top of the seventh, with one out, Jack Porter reached base on dropped third strike. Kevin Karstetter worked a five-pitch walk to move Porter to second. Maddox McDonald bounced into a fielder’s choice but left runners on the corners. However, a groundout to the right side ended the inning.

 

In the top of the ninth, Porter was hit by a pitch with one out. Karstetter lined a single to right to move pinch-runner Justin Turocvski to third. Two batters later, Avery Smith battled for an eight-pitch walk to load the bases. However, Preston Yaucher’s fly ball was caught in right to end the game.
