Baseball Secures 11-5 Win Over FDU On Dollar Dog Night

Anderson, Molinaro each tally three hits; Bullpen holds FDU scoreless over final five innings

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team plated multiple runs in each of the first three innings on its way to an 11-5 victory over FDU on Tuesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Michael Anderson and Bryce Molinaro each collected three hits, including a double and a triple.

 

Penn State improved to 9-21 on the season, while FDU dropped to 19-10.

 

The Nittany Lions improved to 2-0 on Dollar Dog Nights in 2026 and hold a 12-5 record over 17 Dollar Dog Nights since 2023. PSU welcomed 2,014 fans who consumed 4,765 hot dogs, bringing the 17-game total to 85,616.

 

Mason Horwat earned the start on the mound for Penn State, working 1.2 innings. He allowed three runs on three hits. Horwat recorded three strikeouts and three walks. Frankie Sanchez threw 1.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit, while notching a strikeout and a walk.

 

PSU’s bullpen held FDU scoreless over the final five innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out six.

 

Harrison Lollin tossed two innings, giving up one run on two hits. He tallied three strikeouts and two walks. Matthew VanOstenbridge worked a scoreless inning and struck out one.

 

Robert Brown III fired two perfect innings and secured four strikeouts to earn the win. Ethan Bauerschmidt secured a scoreless ninth and struck out one.

 

Chris Mattioli got the start for FDU, tossing two innings. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits. Mattioli registered one strikeout and no walks. Chris Strout threw two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. Logan Magdits worked three scoreless innings and allowed three hits. Chris DeMarco allowed one run over an inning of work.

 

Penn State notched 11 runs on 15 hits. Bryce Molinaro collected a double and a triple among three hits, while adding two RBI and two runs. Michael Anderson also contributed a double and a triple among his three hits, driving in one run and scoring twice. Spencer Barnett and Jayden Davis each drove in two runs. Joey DeMucci had a single, two runs and three steals.

 

Nine different Nittany Lions recorded a hit and six Nittany Lions registered an RBI. Four Nittany Lions combined to steal six bases.

 

FDU collected five runs on six hits. Jimmy Mantuano had a hit and two RBI, while Hunter Ray and Jeremy Delamota both had RBI doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FDU got on the board in the first. Johnathan Gomez and Hunter Ray worked four-pitch walks to begin the game. Garryn Plummer dropped down a sac bunt and reached on a fielder’s choice as Gomez beat the throw to third. Two batters later, Jimmy Mantuano drew a walk to allow Gomez to score. FDU led 1-0.

 

The Nittany Lions answered in the bottom half. With one out, Michael Anderson lined a double off the wall in center. Bryce Molinaro followed with a fly ball off the wall in right as he hustled to third for a triple to bring in Anderson. Two batters later, Jack Porter snuck a grounder inside the third base bag for a double as Molinaro scored. Kevin Karstetter ripped a single through the left side to bring in Porter. Penn State led 3-1.

 

The Knights tied the game in the second. With one out, Travis Stroh and Gomez reached on singles before Ray landed a fly ball on the warning track for a double to bring in Stroh. A groundout by Plummer plated Gomez. The game was even at 3-3.

 

Penn State exploded for five runs in the second. Joey DeMucci bounced a single through the middle. A fielder’s choice by Preston Yaucher resulted in both runners being safe. DeMucci stole third to put runners on the corners before a double steal scored DeMucci and placed Yaucher on second. After a groundout moved Yaucher to third, Anderson was hit by a pitch. Molinaro smacked a double into left to drive in Yaucher. Barnett roped a single to center to bring in Anderson and Molinaro. Porter landed a single in center with a misplayed ball allowing Barnett to hustle home. PSU held an 8-3 lead.

 

FDU added a run in the top of the third. Mantuano was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. He stole second and moved up to third on a throwing error. Jeremy Delamota sent a double into left to bring in Mantuano and cut the FDU deficit to 8-4.

 

The Nittany Lions responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Maddox McDonald led off the inning with a single. DeMucci drew a walk before a double steal put runners on second and third. Jayden Davis dribbled a single through the middle to bring in McDonald and DeMucci. PSU led 10-4 through three.

 

FDU plated a run in the fourth. Gomez worked a leadoff walk. With two outs, Diego Urreta drew a walk. Mantuano dropped a single into left to drive in Gomez. FDU trimmed its deficit to 10-5.

 

Penn State added a run in the eighth. Davis worked a five-pitch walk to leadoff the frame. Anderson sent another line drive to the wall and raced to third for a triple as Davis scored. PSU pushed its lead to 11-5.

The Nittany Lions travel to Columbus for a three-game series at Ohio State next weekend, April 10-12. All games will be streamed on B1G+.

 

Friday’s game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. Saturday is slated for 3 p.m. and Sunday will start at 1 p.m.
