Clay’s 1500m Record Headlines First Day at Larry Ellis Invitational

One of four record book revisions set by Nittany Lions in Princeton

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State track & field wrapped up a solid first day at the Larry Ellis Invitational Friday, racking up several noteworthy performances.

The biggest result came in the Mike Brady Elite men’s 1500-meter run event, where Allon Clay set a program record with a meet-winning 3:37.84. Clay broke the previous mark, set by Brannon Kidder in 2014, by nearly a second.

In the same event, Ryan Watson improved his personal best to a 3:39.38, moving him into sixth in program history, while Yukichi Ishii ran a 3:50.79.

Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Boh Ritchie clocked a third-place 2:03.51 in the women’s 800-meter run, moving her up to fifth in program history. Tayissa Buchanan finished fifth at 2:05.15, while Maddie Miller ran a 2:12.19.

Alex Pancoast provided the only record book revision by a thrower Friday. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native broke sixty meters in the women’s hammer, throwing a 197-1.00 (60.09m) and claiming the sixth-best distance in program history.

EVENT SUMMARY

The day began with the men’s discus, where Matthew Sarnowski turned in a personal best at 169-1.00 (51.55m), placing third. In the pole vault, Mason Bucks tied for sixth place with a 16-2.75 (4.95m).

The men’s 800-meter elite event featured two top-five finishes by Nittany Lions: Kaleb Nastari took fourth place with a 1:48.37, while Carter Fitzgerald finished in fifth at 1:48.47. Jackson Smith earned a personal-best time when he ran a 1:50.95.

In the men’s hammer, senior Sam Engebretson placed sixth with his 192-7.00 (58.70m). The men’s successes stretched into the long jump, where Joe White tied for second at 23-8.00 (7.21m).

Moving back to the track, the women’s elite 1500-meter run saw several Nittany Lions deliver. Lea Hatcher claimed third place when she ran a 4:16.84, while Katie Dallas took fifth at a personal-best 4:19.99. Eva Kynaston turned in a 4:28.11, Claire Zubey ran a 4:32.99 and Allison Dougherty finished at 4:33.89. Kynaston and Dougherty’s times both were personal bests.  

The men’s elite 1500-meter run saw Jacob Smith run a 3:49.73, while Justin Healey and Logan Strawser both placed in the 3000-meter steeplechase top seven. Healey claimed fifth with an 8:52.09, while Strawser took seventh at 8:53.26.  

Brendan Flynn concluded the day in Princeton with a 14:18.14 in the men’s 5000-meter run.
