HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State dominated time of possession in the first stanza, carrying the ball for nearly 10 minutes of the quarter. The Nittany Lions used a nine-minute drive to get on the board on their opening trip down the field. Barker finished off the extended sequence with a 24-yard field goal. The PSU defense came up with its first stop of the contest, allowing Michigan to convert only one first down. Redshirt senior defensive end Caleb Bacon made the stop on third down with 9 yards to go to force a punt for the Wolverines. The Nittany Lion offense came back to the field for just one play to close out the first quarter with a 3-0 advantage.
Both teams punted to open the second frame. Senior safety Jamison Patton came up with a big stop on third down for the defense to give the ball back to the offense after just three plays. The Nittany Lions could not convert, forcing another punt from sophomore punter Nathan Tiyce, who placed the ball at the 7-yard line. Michigan’s quarterback attempted a long throw down the field, but Tracy was there to scoop the ball after it popped out of the receiver’s grasp.
Penn State’s offense returned to the field at its own 15-yard line with 6:20 on the clock but was unable to add any points to the board. The Wolverines followed suit, running just three plays before a third punt was in order. Becht and the offense could not make use of the defensive stop, calling on Tiyce once more.
Michigan’s offense took over with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Wolverines attempted another long pass that was intercepted by the PSU defense. Zayas came up with the one-handed snatch to end the Michigan drive. Penn State knelt down to close out the first half with a 3-0 lead.
Out of the break, the Nittany Lion defense forced another three-play drive, allowing the offense to take over with just under three minutes removed from the clock. On the first play of PSU’s next offensive chance, Becht threw an interception, giving Michigan the ball near midfield. The Wolverines made use of the turnover, adding their first points of the day with a 43-yard rushing touchdown.
The Nittany Lions could not respond, with Becht throwing his second interception of the game. Michigan turned defense into offense for a second time, adding seven points to the board with a rushing touchdown to take a 14-3 lead.
Penn State’s next trip down the field spilled into the fourth stanza, as Becht used a balanced attack to generate PSU’s first touchdown of the evening. Hansen finished off a 12-play drive that covered 75 yards and 5:34 of elapsed time with a 2-yard run to the end zone. Becht found senior tight end Benjamin Brahmer with a shovel pass for a two-point conversion to narrow the score to 14-11 with 11:44 remaining in the contest.
The Wolverines punted after just three plays on their next drive, and the Nittany Lions did the same the next time they had the ball. Michigan punted again before the Nittany Lions fumbled the ball, allowing Michigan to take over in the red zone. The Wolverines added another touchdown to their tally with a 12-yard rush.
Penn State responded with its second touchdown of the night. After an 11-play drive that took only 1:11 of game time, Becht connected with Sowell on a 24-yard toss to the end zone to create a 21-18 score.
