UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – First-year goaltender Morgan Stickney recorded her first collegiate shutout with 18 saves as the Penn State women’s ice hockey team defeated Lindenwood, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Danica Maynard scored the game-winning goal late in the first period off assists from first-year Sofia Ismael and junior alternate captain Abby Stonehouse. Junior captain Grace Outwater added a shorthanded tally in the third off an assist from sophomore Mikah Keller before Ismael capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Stickney turned aside an early point-blank opportunity from Lindenwood’s Krisztina Weiler to open the first period.
- Lindenwood’s Paige Cline hit the post with 2:19 remaining before Maynard broke through 30 seconds later, tucking home the rebound from Ismael’s initial shot to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
- The Nittany Lions finished the period with a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal.
- Stickney preserved the lead with three consecutive saves during an early scramble in front of the net to begin the second period.
- Ismael generated several chances, including a close-range opportunity on the power play seven minutes into the period, but Lindenwood goaltender Ebba Ridderstolpe kept the margin at one.
- Stickney stopped all seven Lindenwood shots in the frame, while Penn State registered 29 shots on goal to carry its 1-0 advantage into the second intermission.
- After killing an early third-period penalty, Penn State doubled its lead with a shorthanded goal at 7:27. Keller found Outwater in front of the net, and the captain buried a shot into the upper-right corner for a 2-0 advantage.
- The Nittany Lions then weathered consecutive penalties, including a brief stretch of 5-on-3 play, to keep Lindenwood off the board.
- Lindenwood pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker with just under four minutes remaining, but Ismael sealed the victory with 2:23 left, sending the puck from center ice into the empty net for an unassisted goal.
