Fleming Named HCA National Co-Rookie of the Month for January

DiMarsico, Smith and McKenna each finish runner-up for national honors following strong month

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman goaltender Josh Fleming (Montreal, Quebec) continues to rake in national recognition as he was honored by the Hockey Commissioners Association as the Co-Rookie of the Month for his performances over five starts in January.

Fleming helped Penn State to a 7-3-0 record for the month posting three wins including his second shutout of the season while leading the Big Ten with a .952 save percentage and a 1.62 goals-against average for the month, both marks ranked in the top-10 nationally.

The rookie is the third Nittany Lion to be honored nationally this season joining fellow freshman Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, Yukon) and sophomore JJ Wiebusch (Verona, Wis.) who earned Rookie of the Month and Co-Forward of the month accolades, respectively, for the month of October.

Fleming leads the nation with a .938 save percentage for the year while his 2.02 goals-against average is good for third in the Big Ten and tied for eighth in the nation. Fleming boasts a 8-4-0 record in 12 starts with a pair of shutouts.

The rookie net-minder was also named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List as well as being named a Hobey Baker Award nominee over the last month.

Junior forward Matt DiMarsico (Wexford, Pa.) was named runner-up for the HCA National-Forward of the Month as he paced the Big Ten with 15 points during the month of January on a league-high seven goals and eight assists. His seven goals were tied for the fourth-most in the nation with three coming in a 7-2 victory over then-No. 5 Wisconsin giving him a national-best three hat-tricks on the season.

DiMarsico had four multi-point efforts for the month along with a career-long eight-game point streak from January 4 through January 30, Penn State had seven-straight wins during this streak.

DiMarsico’s 32 points are tied for the team lead and are tied for fourth in the Big Ten and 14th nationally while his 15 goals are also tied for fourth in the conference and 15th in the nation.

Freshman classmates Jackson Smith (Calgary, Alberta) and Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, Yukon) were also recognized as runner-up for the national Defenseman and Rookie of the Month, respectively.

Smith led all defensemen for the month with five goals while adding three assists to rank tied for sixth in the nation with eight points from the blueline. Smith leads the Big Ten and ranks tied for fourth in the nation among defensemen with eight goals on the season, a mark that ties a Penn State single-season record. His 17 points are second in the Big Ten among blueliners and are top-20 nationally. Smith is also tied for the national lead for powerplay goals among d-men with five on the year.

McKenna led all players nationally with a 1.75 points per game average during the month of January as he collected 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. He had points in six of those eight games including career-best five game point and three-game goal streaks during the month.

McKenna registered multi-point efforts in four games during the month including a career-best four points in a 7-2 rout at then-No. 5 Wisconsin, a game where he also registered his first career hat-trick. His seven goals tied for the rookie-high for the month of January while his 14 points ranked tied for fourth among rookies and seventh among all players.

McKenna’s 32 points this season are tied with DiMarsico for the team lead and are good for third in the nation among freshman and tied for 13th among all players nationally.

No. 6 Penn State has a bye this weekend before hitting the road for a crucial Big Ten series at No. 1 Michigan in Ann Arbor on February 13-14.
