COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Tyler Bowen is in his third season at Penn State as a full-time assistant coach and his fourth overall after previously spending the 2014 season as a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions.
- Bowen, who coached tight ends and served as the offensive recruiting coordinator over the previous two seasons, added co-offensive coordinator to his title following the 2019 campaign.
- He handled the play calling duties in the Cotton Bowl win over Memphis, where Penn State’s 53 points scored were the most for the Nittany Lions in a bowl game, breaking the mark of 50 set in the 1989 Holiday Bowl against BYU.
- Penn State’s five rushing touchdowns tied a Cotton Bowl record for rushing scores in a game.
- The Nittany Lions’ 396 rushing yards were the second-most in Cotton Bowl history, behind Missouri’s 408 yards against Texas in 1946, and were also a program bowl record, besting the mark of 351 set in the 1980 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.
- Tight end Pat Freiermuth picked up second team All-America honors in 2019 from the AFCA and The Athletic after hauling in seven TD receptions (T-4th nationally for tight ends).
- Nick Bowers grabbed three touchdowns during the 2019 campaign and earned a rookie free-agent contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.
- Bowen was selected to the AFCA’s 2019 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession.
- In Bowen’s first season as the tight ends coach, Freiermuth, as a true freshman, finished second among FBS tight ends with eight touchdowns. He claimed The Athletic Freshman All-America and All-Big Ten honorable mention accolades for his efforts.
- Entering the 2018 season, Bowen was named to “College Football Rising Stars: The 30 Under 30” by 247 Sports, featuring the top college coaching prospects under the age of 30.
- On the recruiting front, the 2019 signing class finished No. 11 according to Rivals and No. 13 per 247Sports and ESPN.com.
- The 3.83 average star ranking for the 2019 class was the highest in program history since the inception of the 247Sports Composite in 2000.
- After two seasons at Fordham as the offensive line coach (2015-16) and offensive coordinator (2016), Bowen moved to Maryland as offensive line coach for the 2017 season.
- During his time as offensive coordinator at Fordham, Bowen’s offense led the Patriot League and ranked fourth in FCS in total offense (498.2) and scoring offense (40.1). The Rams also paced the Patriot League in rushing offense (229.7), which was 12th in FCS.
- Under his tutelage at Fordham, four Ram offensive linemen garnered All-Patriot League accolades and two earned All-America status.
- With Bowen at the helm of the offense, running back Chase Edmonds finished fourth in the voting for the 2016 Walter Payton Award and led the FCS in rushing yards per game (163.5).
- In 2015, Bowen directed All-American Garrick Mayweather Jr. and helped Fordham finish second in FCS in passing efficiency (168.3) and ninth in scoring average (36.8).
- As a graduate assistant for the Nittany Lions in 2014, Bowen assisted primarily with the offensive line.
- He helped Penn State to a 7-6 record and a thrilling overtime win against Boston College in the 2014 New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
- Bowen spent the 2013 season as the tight ends coach at Towson University where the Tigers advanced to the FCS Championship Game and finished No. 2 in the country.
- Bowen served as a student assistant coach at Maryland for Ralph Friedgen in 2010, where he helped the Terps finish 9-4 and win the Military Bowl.
- Bowen stayed on the Maryland staff as a graduate assistant for two seasons, working with the offensive line and wide receivers.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A PLAYER
- Bowen played three seasons at the University of Maryland for Franklin, who was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, before injuries ended his career.
