CAREER HONORS - Honorable Mention All-American - 200 Butterfly (2006)
2007-08: Karie represented Penn State in the U.S. Olympic Trials. She owned trial cuts in five events during the season. Karie received Academic All Big-Ten Winter Honors for her studies in marketing. She was .25 seconds away from qualifying for her third NCAAs. She set an ECAC record in the 200 fly. Karie placed fifth in the 200 fly at Big Tens. She swam her fastest 200 fly time of the year in the Big Ten preliminaries. She swam the third-fastest times for Penn State in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Karie swam in 14 events in 2007-08. For the season, she swam in first 14 times, second 11 times and third five times. Meet-by-Meet Highlights: Against West Virginia, she recorded her fastest time in the 100 butterfly, placing second....Three third-place finishes in a quad-meet against Purdue, Michigan State and Virginia....Had five Top 10 marks at the Hoosierland Invitiational....Swam her best time in the 100 breaststroke at Princeton....Finished first in the 500 freestyle vs. West Chester, 12 seconds ahead of the competition....Came in first in the 400 IM in the team[apos]s final meet of the season.
Summer 2007: Karie had a busy summer season as she swam in both the Eric Namesnik Memorial and the Charlotte Ultraswim of the Grand Prix series and U.S. Nationals. At the Eric Namesnik Grand Prix, she placed 11th in the 400 freestyle and 100 butterfly, fifth in the 200 fly and seventh in the 200 IM. At Charlotte, she came in eighth in the 400 free, fifth in the 200 fly, tied for 21st in the 100 fly and also finished 21st in the 100 breaststroke while also pacing 16th in the 200 IM. She capped off the summer with a seventh place finish in the 200 fly and a 20th place showing in the 400 IM at U.S. Nationals.
2006-07: Karie qualified for her second NCAA Championships as a sophomore and rapdily rose to one of the top swimmers on the team and in the Big Ten. She swam in the 200 butterfly and the 200 and 400 IMs at NCAAs. At Big Ten Championships, she scored points in five events: the 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM and as part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams. Karie swam the fastest times of the year on the team in both the 100 fly and 200 IM, and the third-fastest in both the 200 fly and 400 IM. She swam NCAA `B[apos] qualifying times in three events - the 100 fly and both IMs - and an `A[apos] time in the 200 fly. Even more impressive, she swam at least a `B[apos] time in every swim in the 200 fly during the season. She swam in 29 individual races during the season prior to NCAAs and finished in the top three in 17 of those races. For the year, she had eight wins, six individual events and two in relays, as well as nine second place finishes and seven third places. She also swam her top career time in the 200 IM. Meet-by-Meet Highlights: Won the 200 fly, was on the first place 400 free relay team and was a member of the 400 medley relay that finished fourth at the season-opening meet at West Virginia....Placed third in the 100 fly, second in the 200 fly, fourth in the 200 IM and was part of the second place 400 free relay team, and the fifth place 200 and 400 medley relay teams at the Clemson/Virginia/Virginia Tech/Penn State quad-meet....Won the 200 IM, came in fifth in the 100 free and third in the 200 fly at the Big Cat Invitational....Picked up points for Penn State in the 100 fly (2nd place, 3rd in the prelims), 200 fly (4th place, 5th in the prelims), 400 IM (6th place) and as part of the 400 medley relay team (3rd place) at the Bell Grand Prix....Swam her fastest times of the year in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 400 IM at the BGP....Placed second in the 500 free in only her second career swim in that event and was on the second place 200 medley relay team at the dual meet vs. West Chester....Finished second in the 200 fly, sixth in the 200 breast in her first career swim in that event and was on the 200 medley relay team that tied for first in the dual meet vs. Ohio State....Won all three events she swam in as she swept both butterfly events in winning the 100 and 200 and also won the 200 IM in the dual meet vs. Rutgers....Also set a pool record for McCoy Natatorium in the 200 fly in the meet vs. Rutgers....Won the 100 fly, finished second in the 200 fly, second in the 200 IM, third in the 100 breast, was on the second place 200 medley, third place 400 medley, third place 800 free and fifth place 400 free relay teams at the Shamrock Invitational....Picked up points for Penn State in the 200 fly (7th place), 200 IM (7th place, 3rd in the prelims), 400 IM (5th place) and as a part of the 200 medley (3rd place) and 400 medley (4th place) relay teams at Big Ten Championships.
2005-06: Karie capped her very successful freshman season by appearing in the NCAA Championships, one of 12 swimmers to do so and also one of four freshman to make the trip to NCAAs. By doing so, she was able to compete in her home state of Georgia, where the NCAA Championships were held in Athens. She competed in the 200 and 400 IMs as well as the 200 butterfly, in which she finished 15th, earning honorable mention All-American status. She qualified for NCAA[apos]s after finishing sixth in both the 200 butterfly and 200 IM at the Big Ten Championships. On the year, she was a part of four first place relay teams and also won four individual races. All of her top times in her four main events, the 100 and 200 fly and the 200 and 400 IMs, came at either the Big Ten Championships or the NCAA Championships. Meet-by-Meet Highlights: In addition to the 200 fly and 200 IM, she also picked up points for the Nittany Lions at the Big Ten Championships with a 10th place finish in the 100 fly....Took fourth in the 200 IM with an NCAA `B[apos] qualifying time, third in the 200 fly also with a `B[apos] qualifying time, fifth in the 100 fly, and fourth in the 400 IM at the Indiana/Ohio State/Penn State tri-meet....Was on the first place 200 medley relay team and won the 200 fly at the dual meet with Kenyon....Finished third in the 200 fly in the dual meet with Rutgers....Part of the first place 200 medley relay team that won with an NCAA `A[apos] qualifying time and also placed second in the 500 free in her only start of the year in that event in the dual meet with St. Bonaventure...Won both the 100 fly and the 200 IM and finished fourth in the 200 fly at the meet at Florida....Part of the first place 200 medley relay team and also placed second in the 100 fly in the dual meet vs. West Chester....Placed third in the 200 fly and second in the 100 fly at the Auburn/Purdue/Vir-ginia/Penn State quad-meet....Finished third in the 100 fly at the Arizona State/UCSB/Penn State tri-meet....Came in second in the 200 fly and fifth in the 100 fly at the Arizona/Wisconsin/Penn State tri-meet....On the second place 400 medley relay team, the first place 400 free relay team, and won the 200 fly in her first collegiate meet vs. West Virginia.
High School: Karie came to Penn State after winning three state titles in Georgia as a senior. Haglund swam at George Walton High School in Marietta, Ga., and was a member of the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams that claimed Georgia Gold as a senior. She also won the 100 fly state title and was second in the 200 IM. Her two relay teams won state titles in each of her four years of action.
Personal: Karie lists scrapbooking, reading, drawing, running and decorating as hobbies. An outstanding student, she was a member of the National Honor Society, the BETA_Club, the Spanish National Honor Society and won the Walton Raider Pride Award. She managed all that while posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
