Jake Shellenberger begins his second year as an assistant coach with the Penn State swimming program. He works primarily with the sprinters and also heads recruiting for the men[apos]s program. Last year Shellenberger helped the women[apos]s team score at Big Ten[apos]s in both the 50 and 100 free after they not scored in those events the previous year. The men[apos]s team also scored in both events and had six sprinters qualify for the 2007 NCAA championships. After completing his first year at Penn State, Jake spent the summer in Arizona where he was a volunteer coach for the University of Arizona and worked one on one with Arizona[apos]s elite coaching staff and several world record holders and Olympic Gold Medalists as well.
Shellenberger got his start in the collegiate ranks as the head women[apos]s swimming coach at Millersville University. He also held an assistant coaching position with the Trident Swim Club in Lancaster, Pa. and also served as an assistant swimming coach at Chambersburg Area Senior High School. While at Trident he assisted the club[apos]s head coach in all areas of developing senior level athletes, which included Olympic Trials qualifiers, PIAA District and State Champions, and many Division 1 recruits. He was also responsible for developing strength training and dryland programs for Trident[apos]s senior training group and dryland programs for the age group athletes as well. Jake[apos]s first coaching position was during his college years as the head coach of the Mount Joy Swim Team in the Lancaster County Summer Swim League where he worked with approximately 90 kids ages 5-18.
A four-year member of the swimming team at Shippensburg University, Jake was the team[apos]s co-captain in 2004-05 and also served as the vice-president of the student-athlete advisory committee during his senior season. He graduated with a BA in history in December of 2005, serving as the team manager for the 2005-2006 season at Shippensburg after completing his eligibility.
A member of the Dean[apos]s List and a former Academic-All American, he is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Jake writes and oversees the strength training program for the sprint group at Penn State and assists with dryland as well.
[quote]Sprinting is going to be a strength for us not only this year but in the future as well,[quote] Says head coach Bill Dorenkott. We got away from some of our sprint roots or sprint traditions for a couple years and now we are back on track and building that tradition back up.[quote] Jake is a young, fiery coach with a passion for sprinting and it shows; sprinting will continue to be a strength for us here at Penn State,[quote] Explains Dorenkott.
