Colonel (retired) Matthew Posner, MD is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with specialty certification in sports medicine. Posner retired from the Army after 26 years of service. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the "A" Proficiency Designator for recognition of the highest level of professional achievement within the Medical Corps. He was selected into the Order of Military Medical Merit, which recognizes those individuals who have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character.
Throughout his career, Posner was assigned to Army posts throughout the country and overseas, where he utilized his advanced orthopaedic sports medicine skills in the treatment of military personnel throughout the Department of Defense. Furthermore, he had several deployments to Afghanistan and other parts of the Middle East and Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and other operations.
Dr. Posner’s last assignment in the Army was at the United States Military Academy, where he served as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was selected as the program director for the Sports Medicine Fellowship at West Point, with the responsibility for training fellows in the advanced practice of sports medicine surgery and team physician management.
Additionally, Posner served as the head team physician and chief medical officer to the NCAA for West Point, with the primary responsibilities for healthcare policy and student-athlete well-being. In this role, he served as a co-investigator for the NCAA- Department of Defense Grand Alliance Concussion Study, the largest concussion and repetitive head impact study in history.
Posner has extensive experience in shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle injuries in athletes. He has expertise in utilizing techniques and treatments that return highly competitive athletes back to high levels of function and sport. He has dedicated much of career to studying the prevention of sports injuries and return to activity after sports injuries in our military population. Posner has served as an investigator on several studies on musculoskeletal injury prevention, optimization of surgical techniques, and long-term injury analysis in highly competitive athletes and military personnel. He has published over 50 articles and books chapters in multiple peer-reviewed journals and orthopaedic textbooks.
