Men's Track and Field Wins First Scored Meet of the Season

University Park, Feb. 4, 2006- The Penn State Men??s Indoor Track team won their first scored meet of the season today, besting Connecticut and Princeton in the annual tri-meet. The Nittany Lions scored 131 points, followed by U Conn with 121 and Princeton with 107, making it one of the closest tri-meets in recent history.

Freshman Ryan Fritz won the high jump with a mark of 7??11 ???, an NCAA provisional mark. More than a personal success, this turned out to be one of the key performances of the day. Going into the 4x800 meter relay, Penn State led the meet with 114 points, followed closely by UConn with 107. UConn won the 4x800, giving them the seven points necessary to tie the meet. However, with only Fritz left in the high jump, the Nittany Lions pulled away for the win. He was followed by his teammate, senior Tyler Fedeli, who went out at a height of 6??9??.

Other key contributors included senior Alex Langan, who took first in the 60 meter dash (6.94) and second in the 200 (21.80), senior Steve Morgan, who took third in the 400 (48.88), and junior Caleb Hood and senior Ernie Terrell, who finished 1-2 in the 500 (1:04.02 and 1:04.67, respectively). Senior Dan Michael took second in the 1000 (2:27.51) and senior Chris Nirschel took second in the 3000 (8:29.25). Sophomore Ron Jules took second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.06, and both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams took second place.

In field events, freshman Clarence Smith and junior Ryan Kleintop finished first and second in the triple jump, with marks of 47??7 ??? and 46??11 ???. Junior Steve Meyers took second in the shot put with a throw of 53??6 ???, and senior Scott Vernon won the weight throw yet again with a mark of 63??11??, beating the NCAA provisional once again. In the pole vault, UConn??s Jake Radzevich set a new meet record, clearing a height of 16??9 ???.

Next up for the Nittany Lions is the Sykes-Sabock challenge, a two-day meet beginning on Feb. 10.
