| Katelyn BeVard rallied after dropping her first set on Sunday to pull out a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over St. John's Mariana Chachua in Penn State's 6-1 team win. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 19, 2006 - The Penn State women's tennis won seven of the nine individual matches vs. St. Johns' and came away with a 6-1 team win Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Center in University Park, Pa. Penn State improved to 2-3 on the year after its resounding win. ??We did a pretty good job of controlling our own level of fight,?? said Nittany Lion head coach Buffy Baker. ??At the end of the singles matches we did what we had to do to win.?? Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) led the way for Penn State with a solid 6-2, 6-1 No. 1 singles win over the Red Storm's Nataly Tumsevica. Abraham also paired with Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Connecticut) in No. 1 doubles for an 8-2 victory over Barbara Blahutiakova and Mariana Chachua. ??Sasha had a good weekend and has done a great job of setting and controlling the momentum for the entire team,?? said Baker after the match. In other singles play, Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Virginia) rallied after dropping the first set in her No. 2 doubles match to Chachua to pull out a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Connecticut) stayed strong though her No. 3 singles match to defeat Blahutiakova, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Georgia) gave Penn State its fourth singles win with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Lauren Lorenzetti. Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) dropped her No. 5 singles match to Allison Adamiski, 1-6, 4-6, but Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) rounded out the day with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Ashley Harper in No. 6 singles action . The No. 2 doubles team of BeVard and Shular dropped its match to Adamiski and Tumsevica, 6-8, but Penn State's No. 3 doubles duo of Dohanics and Morzan netted an 8-6 win over Harper and Lorenzetti to give Penn State the doubles point in the team scoring. Penn State stays at home next weekend for two 11 a.m. matchups. First on Saturday the Lions host George Washington on Saturday and then Princeton on Sunday. |
