Boston, Mass., March 5, 2006- The Penn State Nittany Lions men's indoor track team has won the 2006 ICAAAA Championship, besting 75 teams and outscoring their closest competition by nearly 20 points. The title was the fifth IC4A crown for Penn State under head coach Harry Groves.
The second day of the meet, which saw the Lions move up 10 places overall, was full of big performances. Ron Jules (Toms River, N.J.) took first place in the 55 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 7.34 seconds. The one-two punch of All-Big Ten second teamer Ryan Fritz (Parkesburg, Pa.) and veteran Tyler Fedeli (Altoona, Pa.) took first and third in the high jump.
Mark Miller (Shllington, Pa.) had perhaps his best meet of the season, taking second place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:49.89 and also competing on the 4x800 relay team with Michael Syrnick (Philadelphia, Pa.), Tim Johnson (New Cumberland, Pa.), and Dan Michael (North Wales, Pa.) which placed third. Chris Morrisey (Ligonier, Pa.) moved up one spot to finish in second place in the heptathlon, amassing 5028 points.
Also scoring for the Lions were Alex Langan (Camp Hill, Pa.) who placed fifth in the 55 meter dash, Caleb Hood (Ligonier, Pa.), who took fifth in the 500 meter run, and Steve Meyers (Wayne, Pa.), who placed fourth in the shot put. Penn State's 4x400 relay squad of Steve Morgan, Adam Stanowick, Caleb Hood and Ernie Terrell placed seventh, earning points for the Nittany Lions as well. Pole vaulter John Vellenowith had an outstanding meet as well, finishing fourth with a vault of 4.80m.
