TALLAHASSEE, FL.; January 20, 2007 ?C Freshman Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Sasha Abraham (Hyderabad, India) led the Nittany Lions in doubles action today during the first day of the Florida State Tennis Tournament. The pair defeated Miranda Foley and Jessica Wente (FSU), 8-6.
Also in doubles, Lauren Macfarlane and Nicola Slater (FSU) topped junior Jenny Shular (Peachtree City, Ga.) and senior Katelyn BeVard (McLean, Va.), 8-2, while freshman Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Andreea Niculescu (Montreal, Quebec) were defeated by Tapiwa Marobela and Carolin Walter (FSU), 8-2.
In singles play, the Nittany Lions faced a top-ranked Northwestern team that came out ready to play. Samantha Murray defeated Abraham (6-2, 6-4), while Georgia Rose topped BeVard (6-0, 6-0). Shular met a tough opponent in Suzie Matzenauer, losing 7-5, 6-3, while Niculescu fell to Lauren Lui (7-5, 7-5). McCarthy lost to Nazlie Ghazal (6-2, 6-2), while sophomore Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) fell to Alexis Conill (6-1, 6-3). Sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) jumped out to the early lead against Keri Robinson with 6-1 in the first set, but dropped the next two sets be a 6-3, 6-2 count. In the final singles match of the day, Lotto fell to Jennifer Taylor (7-5, 6-2).
In the second round of singles, the Lions came out firing against Jacksonville University. Shular fought hard against Tatiana Soldatova, falling in the first match 6-4, but bouncing back with identical 6-1 wins in the final two sets. McCarthy defeated Iva Jaresova (7-5, 6-2) and Dohanics topped Christina Paiva-Flor (6-0,6-1). BeVard fell to Emese Sulyos (6-1, 6-2) and Niculescu lost to Lena Willi (6-0, 6-1).
The Nittany Lions will take the court again tomorrow with two more rounds of doubles and a final round of singles at Scott Speicher Tennis Center beginning at 10 a.m.
