BOCA RATON, Fla., March 4, 2007 ?? Penn State captured the Miken Classic title with a dominating 7-0 win over Florida Atlantic. The Nittany Lions outhit the Owls, 11-1 and Jenn Reynolds (Clovis, Calif) tied a school record for RBI in a game with five. She hit a three RBI double in the first inning and followed it up with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Reynolds also pitched the one-hitter, striking out four.
The junior pitcher led the Lions to a 4-1 record and the Miken Classic title by hitting .600 (6-of-10) including seven RBI. A dominant force in the circle, she also pitched 23 innings with an ERA of .61 and gave up only three runs.
It was a breakout weekend for the Penn State bats. As a team, the Lions outscored and outhit their opponents, 30-5 and 46-18, respectively. Penn State went 4-1 this weekend, bringing its overall record back to .500 at 7-7.
The Nittany Lions started strong, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, a lead that would never be challenged. Leadoff batter Jen Acunto (Hollywood, Fla.) and Ashley Griffith (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) were both walked and then Ashley Esparza (San Pedro, Calif.) hit a single to right field to load the bases. Danielle Kinley (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a bouncing ball to the shortstop who couldn??t reel it in and Acunto scored as a result. Hollee Haines (Riverside, Calif.) and Kayce Zielinski (Arlington, Texas) both reached on fielder??s choice, but the Owls were able to get Griffith and Esparza out at home on the force out. With the bases loaded, Reynolds came to the plate and smacked a three RBI double, scoring Kari Lucas (Centre Hall, Pa.), a pinch runner for Haines, Zielinksi and Kinley.
After two scoreless innings, Acunto hit her second solo homerun of the tournament in the top of the fourth to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Zielinski hit a single to left field and the next batter, Reynolds, belted a two-run homer to give Penn State a 7-0 margin. It was Reynolds?? second home run of the season.
The Lions next head back to California to play two spring break tournaments, beginning with the Bulldog Classic at Fresno State on March 9-11. Penn State will take on Colorado State, BYU, and Toledo and play the host Fresno State for a second time. Penn State then heads down to Cal-State Fullerton for the Judi Garman Classic and games against Cal-Fullerton, DePaul and Texas from March 15-18.
