Nittany Lion Track and Field Wraps Up Record Weekend at Penn Relays



Shana Cox and the 4x400-meter relay place sixth in the Championship of America on Saturday at the Penn Relays.

PHILADELPHIA: April 28, 2007 ?C Collecting three new school records in the past three days, the Penn State track and field team wrapped up an outstanding week of action at the Penn Relays, Saturday at Franklin Field. Both Tanner Evak (State College, Pa.) and Harold Dunn (Butler, Pa.) posted notable performances in the men??s javelin, as Evak went 227-4 (69.30m) to take third in the championship section ?C a personal-best and an improvement on his previous regional-qualifying performance ?C and Dunn threw a regional-qualifying 204-3 (64.27m), to place fifth in the college division.

Sophomore All-American Ryan Fritz (Parkesburg, Pa.) was also solid in the field, clearing a personal-outdoor best 7-2.50 (2.22m) to finish as the runner up in the men??s championship high jump. Fritz??s leap is the best in the East Region, and ranks among the top five performances in the NCAA. Classmate Clarence Smith (Coatesville, Pa.) also improved his previous regional performance, posting a career-best 50-4.75 (15.36m), good for third in the college section of the men??s triple jump.

Freshman Aleesha Barber (Decatur, Ga.) clocked 13.69 to take sixth in the final round of the women??s 100-meter hurdles. Barber improved her own school record in the event preliminaries on Friday, going 13.45.

Ryan Fritz cleared a personal-outdoor best 7-2.50 (2.22m) on Saturday, finishing second in the championship section of the high jump at Penn Relays.

In the relays, Dominique Blake (Bronx, N.Y.), Gayle Hunter (Riverside, Calif.), Briene Simmons (Decatur, Ga.), and Shana Cox (Westbury, N.Y.) combined to run 3:38.48, placing sixth in the Championship of America 4x400-meters.

The Lions return home next weekend, competing in one final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships at the Penn State Open, Saturday, May 5 at Nittany Lion Outdoor Track.
