Baseball Adds Transfer Jack Greenberg to 2008 Roster

Aug. 21, 2007

University Park, Pa. - Penn State head baseball coach Robbie Wine today announced the addition of infielder Jack Greenberg to the roster for the 2008 season. Greenberg is a transfer from Rhode Island and will be a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining at Penn State. A native of Upper St. Clair, Pa., Greenberg is the son of State College Spikes President Chuck Greenberg.

"Jack will provide much needed depth to our infield at both first and third base," said Wine. "He is a big, strong kid with a great work ethic. He will bring valuable Division 1 experience to our team after playing a year at Rhode Island. We are glad to get Jack back in the state and closer to home."

The younger Greenberg played his freshman year at Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. this past season. He played in just nine games, starting one, and had two hits, including a double and scored three runs in 14 at bats. He also had an RBI and drew four walks for a .316 on base percentage. He was also perfect in 16 fielding chances.

Prior to his year at URI, Greenberg had an outstanding prep career at Upper St. Clair High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, also playing football and hockey. He earned All-Section honors as a junior and helped lead the team to the section title and a runner-up finish in the WPIAL. The team also won a section championship his senior year as he hit .402 with four home runs and 31 RBI. He earned All-Section and All-WPIAL honors, was a WPIAL All-Star pick and was named as a Top 10 Prospect by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette as a senior.

The Nittany Lions, who tied for second place in the Big Ten last year, will return six of their eight regular position starters from last year as well as three of four weekend starting pitchers, three key relief pitchers and a top starting pitcher from 2006 that missed nearly all of last season with an injury. They are tentatively scheduled to open fall practice on September 10th.
