University Park, Pa. - The Penn State field hockey team will look to snap its two-game skid on Wednesday as it opens a three-game homestand by facing Lock Haven in the battle of Route 220. The two schools, which are separated by just about 30 minutes on U.S. Route 220, will be meeting for the third straight year.
Penn State (5-4, 0-1 Big Ten) is looking to also break a two-game shutout streak, as the Nittany Lions have not scored since a 5-0 win over West Chester on September 14. The shutouts in back-to-back games broke a streak of 252 consecutive games for the Nittany Lions without being shut out in consecutive games. Despite the two losses, Penn State still remains ranked No. 9 in this week's STX/NFHCA Top 20 poll and the Nittany Lions have now been ranked in the top 10 for 25 straight weeks of polls dating back to the first poll of the 2005 season.
Lock Haven (6-3, 2-0 NEC) is coming off a weekend in which it won its first two NEC games on the road. In fact, the Eagles have played only one home game thus far on the season. Lock Haven is a Division I field hockey program that competes as an associate member of the Northeast Conference for that sport.
The Penn State-Lock Haven series on the field hockey pitch dates back all the way to Penn State's first year as a field hockey program in 1964. Lock Haven leads the series by a slim 14-11-1 margin. The teams met for the first 19 straight years and 24 of 25 years after the inception of the field hockey program at Penn State. After a layoff of 19 years from 1989-2004, the series resumed in 2005, with Penn State having won in each of the last two years, at Penn State in 2005 and at Lock Haven in 2006. Overall, the Nittany Lions have won the last five games in the series.
Following Wednesday's game, Penn State will have its Big Ten home opener on Sunday, September 30 against Northwestern. That will be followed by another Wednesday matinee next Wednesday, October 3 vs. Syracuse.
