UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) continued her 10-game scoring streak with the gamewinner against Michigan Sunday in No. 10 Penn State's 2-0 victory over the visiting Wolverines. The Nittany Lion women's soccer team is now 11-2-1 overall, while Michigan falls to 2-8-3 this season. Penn State, the nine-time defending Big Ten champions, is a perfect 5-0 at the midpoint of the conference season and is the only team without a loss or a tie in conference play.
Schoepfer scored her team-leading ninth of the season when she took the pass from Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.) in the 10th minute to give Penn State the 1-0 lead. The goal, the eventual gamewinner, was her fourth gamewinner of the season.
The insurance goal came from Bouchelle and was her second of the weekend as well as her second this year. Freshman Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) took a hard shot that Bouchelle deflected into the net for the 2-0 lead in the 27th minute and that was all the Nittany Lions would need as they cruised to the 2-0 win.
PSU goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) earned her second-straight shutout, her sixth of year, with six saves on the day. The shutout was also her third of the conference season. Michigan keeper Madison Gates finished with one save on the day. Penn State took six corners to the two attempts by Michigan.
The Nittany Lions are on the road this coming weekend at Iowa on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. CT. On Sunday, Oct. 21, Penn State meets Minnesota live on the Big Ten Network at 1 p.m. The national television appearance is the fifth out of six for the Nittany Lions during the regular season.
No. 10 Penn State returns home on Oct. 26 vs. Purdue in what could prove to be a pivotal match with the Boilermakers, who are ranked eighth nationally right now. That game will start at 7 p.m. and be "Think Pink" Night with fundraising efforts for breast cancer taking place the night of the game. Senior Day is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, vs. Indiana. The match starts at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Currently, Indiana is tied for the lead in the Big Ten, making for a potentially intriguing weekend with heavy conference implications on the final regular season at Jeffrey Field.
