UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., Nov. 27, 2007 - After shooting nearly 60 percent from the field in the first half, the Penn State men's basketball team held off a late surge from Virginia Tech to secure the program's second all-time victory in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with a 66-61 triumph on Wednesday at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Behind a valiant effort from senior Mike Walker (Lewisberry, Pa.), the Nittany Lions allowed the Hokies to close within one point late in the second half, but held off the charge late in the going to secure the five-point victory. Walker netted a team-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including three baskets from behind the arc. Freshman Talor Battle (Albany, N.Y.) added nine points and three assists. Sophomore David Jackson (Farrell, Pa.) also scored nine points, including a pair of crucial free throws with under 10 seconds to play.
Penn State finished the contest shooting 47.3 percent from the field on 26-of-55 shooting. The Nittany Lions sank seven of their 20 attempts from behind the arc. Penn State improves to 3-3 on the season with the victory.
Jeff Allen led the Hokies with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Deron Washington chipped in with 12 points, while A.D. Vassallo scored 10 points. Virginia Tech finished the game shooting 43.3 percent from the field and only 15.4 percent from behind the arc. The Hokies out-rebounded the Nittany Lions 36-31. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 2-3 on the year.
