Penn State Lands 119 Student-Athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten Team

Track and field standout Christen Clemson is among Penn State's 119 Academic All-Big Ten selections for the spring and at-large sports. A total of 245 Nittany Lion student-athletes earned academic all- conference honors this season, tied for the second highest total in school history.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; May 31, 2007 ?? The Nittany Lions placed 119 student-athletes, representing 13 spring and at-large sports, on the Academic All-Conference team. Penn State??s 119 spring and at-large recipients are second among conference institutions behind Ohio State, which has 20 spring and at-large sports teams.

Penn State was second among league schools with 245 total Academic All-Conference selections this season. That total is tied for the second highest in school history, behind the 253 honorees in 2004-05 and tied with the 245 recipients during the 2003-04 campaign.

Penn State tops all league institutions with 2,798 Academic All-Big Ten picks over the last 13 years.

The Nittany Lions had the most men??s tennis Academic All-Conference choices with eight, while the softball team (10 recipients) and the women??s tennis squad (6) tied for the conference lead in their respective sports. The men??s track & field team led all Penn State programs with 19 Academic All-Big Ten selections, while the women??s track & field team laid claim to 16 honorees, the most for any women??s team.

The Big Ten Academic All-Conference award winners also achieved excellence outside of the classroom. Seniors Joseph Blackburn and Brian Ernst earned third team All-Big Ten accolades as they helped the baseball team to its highest win total since the 2000 campaign. Senior Sophia Hiss is a three-time All-American and led the women??s fencing team to the national championship, while Renee Cipro, Jessica Lieb and Kerry Shea were all IWLCA All-Americans for the women??s lacrosse team. Junior Luke Murray was a first team All-EIVA choice as he helped the men??s volleyball team to the National Collegiate Championship semifinals. Junior Michael James was a first team all-conference choice and was instrumental in leading the men??s tennis team to its most Big Ten wins in program history and a second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. In softball, sophomore Danielle Kinley garnered second team All-America accolades. Junior Robert Rohanna was a first team All-Big Ten selection as he led the men??s golf team to their 14th NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Greg Nye. For the women??s track & field squad, Christen Clemson and Briene Simmons qualified for the NCAA Championship, while senior Brian Boyle was a second team All-ECAC honoree for the men??s lacrosse team.

The Big Ten recognized 944 spring and at-large sports student-athletes. To be eligible for the Academic All-Big Ten team, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
