Casey Sandy Wins Third Big Ten Men's Gymnast of the Week Honor This Season

Feb. 27, 2008

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State junior Casey Sandy (Brampton, Ont.) has been honored as Big Ten Men's Gymnast of the Week for the third time this season, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The 2007 All-American was recognized with the award for his standout performances in the Nittany Lions' victory over Ohio State last weekend.

For Sandy, the conference honor is the fifth of his career. He was also named Big Ten Men's Gymnast of the Week earlier this season after stellar outings versus Army and Michigan. Two years ago, Sandy became the only freshman to be selected for the award twice, winning it for his efforts in two of his first three collegiate meets.

Against the Buckeyes, Sandy won the high bar title and the all-around crown, helping Penn State post a season high score of 360.550. He upheld his status as the nation's No. 1-ranked all-around competitor, claiming his fifth title in five tries this season with a score of 91.000. Sandy's third high bar win in 2008 was secured with a team season best score of 15.250. Sandy also finished second in the floor exercise and parallel bars and third in the still rings (tie) and vault, giving him an impressive 29 top three finishes this season.

Sandy was also chosen as Penn State male student-athlete of the week for the second time this year this week.

The defending national champion and second-ranked Nittany Lions are in the midst of a rare but welcome week off before they host No. 13 William & Mary and No. 14 Navy in a tri-meet on Sat., March 8 at 2 p.m. at Rec Hall. Last season, Penn State defeated Navy (212.800-191.700) and William & Mary (212.800-191.750) in a meet at the Tribe's home venue, Kaplan Arena, in Williamsburg, Va. The Nittany Lions hold a combined 61-10 record in their all-time series versus Navy and William & Mary.
