Federal Way, Wash. - Five members of the Penn State men's swimming team began competition at the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday. Two individuals and one relay team competed, with the relay team logging its fastest time of the year in that event.
The Nittany Lions did not qualify any relay teams or individuals for the finals on the first day of the championships. However, the 200 free relay team of Vincent Reydams, Sean Swanepoel, Jason Goldner and Sean Biedermann logged the fastest time of the year for a Penn State 200 free relay team, swimming the heat in 1:19.16, missing a spot in the consolation finals and a shot at an honorable mention All-American honor by just .21 of a second.
Biedermann also competed individually in the 200 IM for the second straight year at NCAA's. He finished 45th in a time of 1:50.11. Reydams swam in the prelims of the 50 free, finishing tied for 47th place in :20.40.
Penn State is scheduled to send two individuals out in tomorrow's prelims. Biedermann will swim in the 200 free prelims while Pat Schirk will swim in the 100 back.
