Penn State is proud to be one of six hosts for the 2008 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships, scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET at Rec Hall. No. 1 Georgia, No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 Denver, No. 29 Brigham Young and No. 30 Iowa State join the Nittany Lions, who are making their 34th appearance in the Regional Championships.
The individual all-around competitors not on a qualifying team include Marissa Rosen (Pennsylvania), Alina Liao (Yale), Shannon Vafiadou (Pittsburgh), Lorraine Gallow (Bridgeport) and Laura Sevarino (Rutgers) with Maddie Pearsall (Cornell) as the alternate. The individual event specialists not on a qualifying team include Helena Diodati (New Hampshire/vault & bars), Taryn LaFountain (New Hampshire/beam) and Molly Moyer (Pittsburgh/floor).
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors not on an advancing team from each of the six Regionals will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, individual event winners will also advance if they are not a part of an advancing team or one of the all-around qualifiers. The 2008 NCAA Championships will be hosted by the University of Georgia from April 24-26.
Tickets will be on sale at the door the day of the event and it will be general admission seating. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for youth and students. Groups of 20 or more, any age, are just $4 per person for adult, youth and students. For additional ticket information, please call 814-863-1000.
Penn State will open the 2008 Regional Championships on beam and then following a bye, move to floor. The Nittany Lions compete on vault in the fourth rotation and then following a bye, close out the meet on the uneven bars.
Last weekend at the Big Ten Championships, sophomore Brandi Personett (Katy, Texas) captured her second consecutive individual all-around title with a career-high-tying 39.525. A two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, Personett also defended her Big Ten vault title as she posted a first-place 9.950 and tied for the floor crown with a 9.900.
