COLUMBUS, Ohio; - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team dropped a tough 17-6 road game at Ohio State in non-conference lacrosse action. An injury-plagued Penn State squad managed only two goals in the second half as Ohio State pulled away for the win.
The Nittany Lions hung close early, trailing only 4-3 after one period on goals from Andrew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.), Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Brian Shea (Gaithersburg, Md.). But the Buckeyes outscored Penn State 5-1 in the second period to lead 9-5 at the break. Ryan McAleenan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored Penn State's only goal in the second period.
The Buckeyes continued to build on their lead with a 3-1 edge in the third period and a 5-1 edge in the fourth to post the final score. Mackrides got both of Penn State's second half goals.
Ohio State was led by Kevin Buchanan with four goals and two assists. Joel Dalgarno added three and one. Penn State goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.) had only 12 saves and gave up 16 goals in just over 56:00. Ohio State outshot Penn State 34-28 for the game but was three of four in man-up opportunities. Penn State posted a huge 19-26 edge on face-offs, led by Joe Britt's (Columbus, Ohio) 10 for 13 performance.
Penn State falls to 1-3 while the Buckeyes improve to 2-2. The Nittany Lions will return home to host Villanova on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m.
