STATE COLLEGE, Pa; April 12, 2008 - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team lost a hard-fought 11-7 road game to St. John's in a regionally televised ECAC Lacrosse League game. The Nittany Lions managed only two goals after trailing 7-5 at intermission in the game that was telecast live on CN8 as the ECAC Lacrosse League Game of the Week.

Junior Max VanArsdale (Rochester, N.Y.) led Penn State with two goals in the game, the only Nittany Lion to tally more than one point. Goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.) had 12 saves to keep Penn State close throughout the game.

The Nittany Lions got on the board first when sophomore Matt Loy (Somerset, N.J.) put in a nice behind the back shot off an assist from Rob Forster (Jenkintown, Pa.) at the 10:32 mark. But St. John's answered quickly, scoring off the ensuing face-off as Jack Rosson won the face-off and quickly scored on the fast break with 10:25 to play in the opening period. Justin O'Donnell put SJU up 2-1 with a man-up goal at the 7:20 mark and Garrett Mitchell scored the Red Storm's third straight goal at the 6:01 mark to give the home team an early 3-1 lead. VanArsdale scored unassisted with 3:07 left in the period to cut Penn State's deficit in half, 2-1, after one period of play.

VanArsdale tied the game early in the second period, scoring an unassisted man-up goal just over 2:00 into the second period, but the tie was short lived as SJU's Tom Michaelsen put SJU up 4-3 less than a minute later. Sophomore Chris Mulqueen (Downingtown, Pa.) took a Brian Shea (Gaithersburg, Md.) assist to tie the game once more with 10:09 to play but Rob Gannon put St. John's up again two minutes later, scoring off an O'Donnell assist. Sophomore Charley Henneghan (Beverly Hills, Mich.) continued his outstanding season, winning the ensuing face-off and scoring unassisted to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:49 to play in the half. But St. John's Michaelsen twins would score the next two goals, getting the ball past Penn State goalie Adams. Trevor Michaelsen scored a man-up goal at the 5:22 mark and six seconds later, brother Tom scored to give the Red Storm a 7-5 lead at intermission.

Junior Ryan McAleenan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the second half's first goal, scoring unassisted at the 9:47 mark to push Penn State to within one, 7-6. But O'Donnell put St. John's back up by two, scoring just over a minute later to make the score 8-6. Gannon scored the only other goal of the period as both defenses stiffened, with the Red Storm player scoring with 1:53 left to give SJU a 9-6 lead heading into the final period.

Bubba Scott (Rockville, Md.) scored the first goal of the fourth period, notching an unassisted score at the 12:12 mark to cut the St. John's lead to 9-7. But SJU scored the final two goals of the game as Malcolm Miles and Gannon each scored to post the 11-7 final.

St. John's out-shot Penn State 41-31, including a 23-18 shot on goal edge. Adams 12 saves were matched by St. John's goalie Gavin Buckley, who had 11. St. John's also won 12 of the 22 face-offs, countering what had been a dominant PSU face-off unit. St. John's took great advantage of Penn State's five penalties, scoring four times in five man-up situations. Penn State was one for two.

Penn State is now 4-6 overall, 1-4 in the ECAC. St. John's is now 1-9, 1-4 in the conference. The Nittany Lions will host No. 11 Bucknell on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in their next outing. Penn State also hosts ECAC foe Rutgers on Sunday, April 20, at 1 p.m.
