UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., April 14, 2008 - A large contingent of nearly 600 runners, including Penn State head coach Ed DeChellis and his wife, Kim, and daughter, Lauren, enjoyed gorgeous spring weather over the weekend at the Annual Coaches vs. Cancer 5k run on the Penn State campus.
The race, which winds its way through the University Park campus, was won by Tim Murphy. Murphy posted a time of 16:38, running 5 ½ minute mile splits.
Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer student committee, headed by Kelsey Dunn, organizes and runs the event which is part of Penn State's overall Coaches vs. Cancer effort. Penn State CVC is closing in on over $1 million raised in its 12th year. CVC has set a goal of raising a record of over $200,000 this year to fight cancer and help those affected by cancer in the Centre Region. The CVC 5K race kicked off that effort raising more than $8,000. Near perfect weather conditions contributed to a turn-out almost double that of the 2007 race.
The Penn State CVC student group is made up of about 30 students who meet weekly to plan fundraising events. Penn State students who would like more information about joining the committee, please contact cvcpennstate@gmail.com.
Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer's 12th Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on June 6 at the Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses. Information on the event, which included a Celebrity Sponsor Reception Thursday night at the Bryce Jordan Center, a 5-man 18-hole golf scramble and post-golf awards banquet, can be found at CVCpennstate.org or by calling Kent Wible at 814-278-6945.
