STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -
The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team gave home-standing Hobart all it wanted on Saturday, but the Statesmen scored the game's last three goals to steal an 8-6 ECAC Lacrosse League victory from the Nittany Lions. Penn State led 6-5 early in the fourth before HC's late game surge doomed the Lions.
Junior Rob Forster (Jenkintown, Pa.) returned after missing last week's game with an injury to spark Penn State with five points off two goals and an assist. Charley Henneghan (Beverly Hills, Mich.) continued his outstanding season with another two goal game as well. Goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.), leading the league in every major goalie statistical category, was once again superb, collecting 11 saves against 35 shots.
Hobart scored the first period's only goal as Daryl Veltman tallied his first of four goals at the 11:08 mark of the opening period. Hobart also scored the first goal of the second period as Jeff Colburn put the Statesmen up 2-0 with 14:04 left in the first half. But the Nittany Lions reeled off the next three goals. Forster scored off a Matt Warner (Geneva, N.Y.) assist, Andrew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.) scored unassisted and Henneghan scored unassisted to give Penn State a 3-2 lead with 5:56 to play. But Hobart would tie the game before intermission when Veltman knocked in a goal at the 4:43 mark.
The teams traded third period goals, with Forster scoring off a Warner assist early in the third period to put Penn State up 4-3. Veltman scored again for Hobart before Matt Loy (Somerset, N.J.) took a Mackrides assist with 4:52 left in the period to put Penn State up 5-4. But once again, Hobart would knot things before the end of the quarter. Doug Shiver scored unassisted with just :35 left in the period to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the final period.
Henneghan scored a man-up goal for Penn State with 12:16 to play, giving the Nittany Lions a 6-5 lead. But Hobart's defense stiffened and the Statesmen got goals from Veltman (at the 11:35 mark), Colburn (with 8:05 to play) and Veltman again (with 5:46 to play) as HC grabbed the hard fought 8-6 victory.
Hobart out shot Penn State 35-33 and the teams each grabbed 40 ground balls. The Nittany Lions were successful on only 21 of 30 clears while Hobart got through on 22 of 28. Joe Britt (Fairfax, Va.) won 11 of his 15 face-off attempts to help give Penn State an 11 of 18 edge. Fairfield goalie Max Silverlicht had 14 saves against 33 Penn State shots.
Penn State is now 4-5 overall, 1-3 in the ECAC. Hobart moves to 5-4, 2-2 in the league. The Nittany Lions next game will be a regional televised contest. Penn State will visit St. John's on Saturday, April 12, for a 1 p.m. game that will air live on CN8.
