UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's tennis team will be traveling to Norfolk, Va., this weekend to compete in the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational at Old Dominion University. It is the second of three tournaments on the Nittany Lions' fall schedule.
"We have been focusing on our conditioning and shot selection," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "I know the team is excited to get back out there and compete."
This weekend will be the season debut of senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who will be taking part in both singles and doubles competition. Dohanics finished 13-12 overall in singles last season and played primarily at the No. 4 singles spot.
Joining Dohanics will be seniors Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Lauren Holzberg (Easton, Conn.), juniors Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) and freshmen Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) and Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine).
The tournament will consist of four singles flights and four doubles flights. The Nittany Lions will be playing against 25 other teams, including Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech, who were ranked last season.
In the William & Mary Invitational last month, Mical defeated Kate Lukonskaya of Arkansas in the Flight B Consolation (6-4, 7-5). McCarthy and Prishlyak had a strong showing doubles, but fell to Emily Carbone and Lukonskaya of Arkansas in the Flight B Third Place match 8-5.
After the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational, Penn State will wrap up its fall play at the Yale Tournament the weekend of Oct. 31.
