Women's Tennis Wraps Up Fall Season on a High Note

NEW HAVEN, CONN.; - The Penn State women's tennis team concluded play today at the Yale Invitational with five singles victories and three doubles victories. The tournament wraps up the Nittany Lions' fall schedule.

"I saw a lot of great things this weekend and also some to work on for the spring," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "This tournament will be a good spring board for us into our matches next semester."

Seniors Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned a second place White doubles flight finish after falling to Danielle Abraham and Cori Lefkowith of Boston University in the final (8-0). Morzan finished an undefeated singles weekend with a Silver flight victory over Sarah Lederhandler of Yale (6-2, 6-4).

In other doubles play, junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) finished third in the Blue doubles flight after defeating Vanessa Steiner and Elizabeth Corrao of Boston University by a score of 8-4. In the Silver flight, sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Florida) and freshman Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) shut out Michaela Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg of Fairfield, 8-0, and freshmen Michaela Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) and Allie Hefter (Longmont, Colo.) defeated Dana Postupack and Marisa Voloshin of Fairfield. Junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) fell to Vicky Brook and Jessica Fhee of Yale, 8-6.

In singles action, Stracar defeated Danielle Abraham of Boston University (6-3, 6-2) to win the Silver flight consolation. Prishlyak defeated Janet Kim of Yale in Blue flight competition (6-4, 3-6, 10-6), finishing the weekend with a 3-1 singles record. McCarthy earned a walkover victory over Ashley Spicer of Syracuse.

Also in singles play, Hefter topped Kasey Rosenberger of Quinnipiac (6-4, 5-7, 10-2) in the Silver flight. Mical fell to Vicky Brook of Yale in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. Sarah Lotto was topped by Christina Tan of Syracuse (6-4, 6-3) and Zobeideh fell to Lindsay Clark of Yale (6-3, 6-4). Appearing in her first tournament for the Nittany Lions, freshman Kristen Roth fell to Yana Sadovskaya of Boston University in the Silver flight, 7-5, 6-1.

After having the rest of the semester off, the team will kick off their spring schedule in a home match against Bucknell on Saturday, Jan. 17.
