BINGHAMTON, N.Y., November 23, 2008 - The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, ranked No. 14 in the nation, pounded host Binghamton 36-8 in the final round of the 2008 Sprawl and Brawl Duals, going 3-0 on the day and improving its record to 3-2. The Nittany Lions used a total team effort, getting two pins, two technical falls and two majors as head coach Troy Sunderland's squad won eight of ten bouts.
Sophomore Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) and senior Tim Haas (Camp Hill, Pa.) got things started for Penn State, each notching technical falls to put the Lions up 10-0 early. Freshman Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) followed that with a pin at 141 and All-American Bubba Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va.) completed a perfect day with a win at 149.
All-American Dan Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) posted a solid decision at 157 before senior Mark Friend (Libertyville, Ill.) got a major decision at 165. Freshman Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) got a major decision at 174 and red-shirt freshman Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) capped things off with a pin at heavyweight as the Nittany Lions collected 12 bonus points in the strong performance. The Nittany Lions had 22 takedowns to only seven for the Bearcats as well.
Pataky was a perfect 3-0 at 125 for Penn State today; Haas was 3-0 at 133; Jenkins went 3-0 at 149 and Molinaro went 2-0 at 141. Friend was 2-1 at 165, Wright was 2-1 at 174 and Wade was 2-1 at HWT as well.
Penn State is now 3-2 on the year while Binghamton falls to 1-3. The Nittany Lions return to action in State College when they take part in the 2008 Nittany Lion Open on Sunday, Dec. 7. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door. Penn State's next dual meet is set for Sunday, Dec. 14, when the Nittany Lions host West Virginia in Rec Hall. 125: Sophomore Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) took to the mat at 125 to battle Binghamton's Tyler Malmberg. Pataky wasted no time at all, hitting a standing cradle right off the opening whistle and nearly pinning Malmberg within :15 of the bout's start. The three point near fall gave him a 5-0 lead early on. Pataky added three more back points with a nice roll off the reset and led 8-0. The talented sophomore rolled Malmberg once more and led 11-0 with :50 left in the opening period. A fourth three-point near fall title gave Pataky a 14-0 lead with :15 left. Pataky could not quite title Malmberg one more time to get a first period technical fall but still led 14-0 with 2:54 in riding time to start the second period. Malmberg chose neutral to start the second period. The Lion sophomore got the technical fall with a takedown at the 1:05 mark, posting a 16-0 TF at the 3:55 mark to put Penn State up 5-0 early. Pataky went 3-0 on the day, including two technical falls.
133: Co-captain Tim Haas (Camp Hill, Pa.) looked to continue his outstanding weekend at 133 against BU's Robert Slavin. Haas took a quick lead with a takedown at the 2:10 mark and led 2-1 after a Slavin escape. The Lion senior added a second takedown shortly after and led 4-1 at midway point of the first period. After the second takedown, Haas put together a strong ride and worked to tilt Slavin. Haas did just that with under :20 left, picking up a three-point near fall as the period ended to lead 7-1 with 2:00 in riding time heading into the second period. Slavin chose neutral to start the middle period only to get taken down once more by Haas. Leading 9-1, Haas turned Slavin once again and picked up another three-point near fall to go up 12-1. Yet another three-point turn put Haas up 15-1 with :30 left in the middle stanza. Haas chose neutral start the third period and picked up the technical fall at the 5:42 mark with another takedown. The 17-1 TF put Penn State up 10-0 and improved Haas to 3-0 on the day with a pin, a technical fall and a win over a ranked wrestler.
141: Red-shirt Freshman Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) met Binghamton's Anwar Goeres at 141. Molinaro wasted no time in getting out to an early lead with a takedown at the 2:41 mark. The Nittany Lion freshman then put together a very strong ride, looking for his own turning combination. Molinaro broke Goeres down repeatedly and finally turned him to his back at the 1:08 mark for a three-point tilt. Molinaro was not to be denied the fall as, after a readjustment, got the pin at the 2:12 mark to put Penn State up 16-0. Molinaro went 2-0 on the day with a pin and a major.
149: All-American Bubba Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va.), ranked No. 2 at 149, met Binghamton's Matt Kaylor. Looking to join his teammates in Penn State's fast start, Jenkins hit two quick cement mixers, but each time Kaylor rolled through until Jenkins finally got the takedown with 1:30 left in the opening period. Kaylor escaped but Jenkins added a second takedown to lead 4-1 with :22 left in the opening stanza. Jenkins rode Kaylor out to carry that lead into the second period, chose down to start the middle stanza, and escaped to a 5-1 lead. Another Jenkins takedown at the 1:28 mark put the Nittany Lion co-captain up 7-2 after letting Kaylor loose. Kaylor looked for Binghamton's first takedown, getting in deep on Jenkins' feet, but the Nittany Lion battled out of trouble to carry the 7-2 lead (with 1:06 in riding time) after two periods. Kaylor chose down to begin the final period and escaped to a 7-3 deficit. Kaylor nearly took Jenkins down, but Jenkins countered in the final seconds to get a fourth takedown and, with a riding time point, post a 10-3 win and push Penn State up 19-0. Jenkins went 3-0 on the day, including pinning a ranked grappler and posting a major decision as well.
157: Penn State All-American Dan Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong. N.J.) looked to bounce back from two upset losses earlier in the day against Binghamton's Nate Patterson. Vallimont, who entered the weekend ranked No. 2 at 157, Nate Patterson. Vallimont quickly worked into a front headlock, turned it into a near-side cradle and turned Patterson to his back. Vallimont worked to step over to work for the pin. Patterson battled out of the cradle, but the strong move put Vallimont up 5-0 early. Patterson escaped to a 5-1 deficit and then notched Binghamton's first takedown of the dual, taking the Nittany Lion down at the 1:00 mark to cut his lead to 5-3. Vallimont nearly reversed Patterson, but time ran out in the period before he could work his way over the Bearcat grappler. Leading 5-3, Vallimont chose neutral to start the second stanza and used a strong double-leg to gain control of Patterson. The Bearcat grappler fought Vallimont hard enough, however, to force a stalemate and a reset at the 1:19 mark. Patterson tied the score at 5-5 with a frenzied takedown at the :48 mark and began looking to turn Vallimont. Vallimont could not escape as Patterson rode Vallimont out to keep the bout tied 5-5 heading into the third. Patterson chose down to start the final period and Vallimont allowed him up. Now trailing by one, Vallimont began working for a go-ahead takedown. A quick shot at Patterson's leg led the Nittany Lion to a takedown at the :23 mark. Not to be denied, the Nittany Lion worked to complete a cradle and turn the Bearcat, but Patterson managed to work his way out of bounds with :06 left. Vallimont needed only to hold Patterson down for the final :06 and the Nittany Lion managed just that to post a hard-fought 7-6 decision. The victory put Penn State up 22-0.
165: Senior Mark Friend (Libertyville, Ill.) took to the mat at 165 against BU's Ryan McGarity. A frenzied start to the bout led to a Friend takedown after a :30 scramble. Friend began working for a turning combination from the top. Friend could not manage a near fall but he did build up a 1:30 riding time edge before McGarity escaped to a 2-1 deficit. Friend continued his pressure and picked up another takedown with :20 left. A ride-out by Friend gave the Nittany Lion senior a 4-1 lead with 1:53 in riding time after the opening period. McGarity chose down to start the second stanza but could not find any breathing room as Friend dominated the Bearcat grappler from the top position. With :55 left, Friend completed a cradle and turned McGarity for a three-point near fall and a 7-1 lead with :28 left in the period. Friend rode McGarity out once again and carried that lead (with a bonus point in hand) into the final period. Friend chose down to start the last period. McGarity, however, was very strong on top. Friend needed only to escape to secure the major decision but McGarity was undaunted on top and maintained control until just :10 left. Friend escaped after a reset and added a final takedown to post an 11-1 major decision and put Penn State up 26-0.
174: True freshman Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.), fresh off notching his first collegiate pin, met Binghamton's Brett Nelson at 147. Wright was ranked No. 16 nationally. Nelson got the bout's first takedown early in the first period, but Wright quickly answered with a swift escape and a powerful double-leg takedown at the 2:20 mark to take a 3-2 lead. Wright then began working Nelson from the top, looking for an opening to turn him. Wright nearly turned Nelson, but the third-year Bearcat managed to keep his back off the mat to keep the bout close. Wright dominated the first period's final 2:24, riding Nelson out to lead 3-2 heading into the second period. Nelson chose down to start the middle stanza and found the going just as tough this time as Wright lifted the Bearcat off the mat and nearly finished off a cradle as the two grapplers came down. After a reset, Wright allowed Nelson up to a 3-3 tie. After a reset with :15 left, Wright scored quickly off a beautiful double-leg with just :12 left to carry a 5-3 lead into the final period. Wright chose down to start the third period and escaped to a 6-3 lead. Nelson got in deep on Wright's right ankle, but Wright stepped over the Bearcat to force a stalemate with 1:20 left in the bout. Wright got his third takedown by locking up his waist, stepping across him and tripping the Bearcat to the ground. The swift move gave Wright an 8-4 lead after Nelson escaped. Wright added another takedown, cut Nelson loose, and quickly added another takedown to post a convincing 13-5 major decision. The win put the Nittany Lions up 30-0. Wright went 2-1 on the day, including a pin and a major.
184: In the lone bout featuring two ranked grapplers, Nittany Lion senior Phil Bomberger (Port Royal, Pa.) met Binghamton's Josh Patterson at 184. Bomberger was ranked No. 13 while Patterson came in ranked No. 17. Bomberger took the bout's first real shot, but Patterson countered Bomberger and took the Nittany Lion down for a takedown at the 1:24 mark. The ranked Bearcat added three near-fall points to lead 5-0. Patterson added one more three-point tilt as time expired to lead 8-0 with 1:26 in riding time after one period. Bomberger chose down to start the second period and escaped to an 8-1 deficit. Patterson added another takedown at the :30 mark to up his lead to 10-1 heading into the final period. Leading by nine, Patterson chose down to start the final period and quickly reversed Bomberger to take a 12-1 lead. Another three-point near-fall put Patterson up 15-1 and the Bearcat began looking for a technical fall. Bomberger needed an escape to avoid the technical fall as Patterson had a riding time point wrapped up. But before he could get out, Bomberger was hit with a stall point and that point gave Patterson a 16-1 technical fall at the 6:42 mark. The win broke up Penn State's shut-out attempt and cut the Nittany Lion lead to 30-5
197: Stepping in to spell starter Clay Steadman (McKean, Pa.) was sophomore 197-pounder Nathan Andrews (Spring Mills, Pa.). Andrews made his Penn State dual meet debut against Binghamton's Corey Waite. Andrews, Penn State's academic leader, looked to add a dual meet win to his resume against Waite. Each wrestler looked to score early, with Waite setting the tempo but Andrews fighting off each Bearcat move. Andrews fought off two solid Waite single legs to keep the b out scoreless through the first period. Tied at 0-0, Andrews chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. But Waite, who never lost contact with Andrews, got his first takedown at the 1:40 mark to take a 2-1 lead. Another Andrews escape tied things up again at 2-2 and this time, Andrews got in deep on Waite and forced a scramble on the edge of the mat. Andrews and Waite struggled and scrambled off the mat, forcing a neutral reset with :45 left. Andrews once again got in on a head-outside single and forced yet another scramble. This time, Waite worked through the flurry to get a takedown and lead 4-2 heading into the final period. Waite chose down to start the third stanza and was cut loose by Andrews to a 5-2 lead. Andrews once again shot low on Waite and once again Waite countered to get his own takedown and lead 7-3 after an Andrews escape. Waite added a fourth takedown with :30 left, upping his lead to 9-3. Andrews continued to battle but the Bearcat wrestler would add a riding time point to post a hard-fought 10-3 win. Penn State now led 30-8.
HWT: Red-shirt freshman Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) took to the mat against BU's Art Garvey at HWT. Wade broke out to an early 2-0 lead with a solid double leg at the 2:28 mark. Wade turned Garvey to his back quickly and after just :20 of work on top, planted the Bearcat big man for a pin at the 1:28 mark. The six point victory gave Penn State a 36-8 win over the hosts. Wade went 2-1 on the day, with a pin. His only loss was a hard-fought decision to Edinboro's ranked HWT.
