UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; - The Penn State women's tennis team won it's first match of the spring season today by defeating the Bucknell Bison, 6-1 in their home opener.
"I was proud of the way the girls played today," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "We have many things to work on, but I thought there was a lot of spirit and positive things that came out in the matches."
Freshman Monkia Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) and junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) set the tone for the afternoon in a convincing 8-0 doubles victory over Tania Varela and Lauren Lucido. Junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) won their last two games to hold off Paulina Gamboa and Carlin Calcaterra, 8-6. Freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) and senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clinched the doubles point for the Nittany Lions with an 8-3 win over Dara Dwojewski and Ashley Globerman.
In singles play, Mical continued her strong performance with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gamboa. Prishlyak topped Lucido (7-5, 6-0), while Zobeideh came up short against Varela (7-5, 6-4). Dohanics topped Globerman (6-0, 6-2), while McCarthy earned a hard-fought win over Dwojewski, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. Senior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) defeated Dumitrita Iepuras in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) finished out the day for Penn State with an 8-2 victory over Carlin Calcaterra.
The Nittany Lions will be on the road for the next two weekends, starting in Boise, Idaho where they will face Montana State Jan. 24 at noon and Boise State Jan. 25 at noon. The Lions will then travel to Huntington, W.Va. to face South Alabama Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. and Marshall Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.
