BOISE, IDAHO - The Penn State women's tennis team fell to 2-1 today with a 7-0 loss to Boise State (2-0) on the road at the Boas Tennis Center.
In doubles action, freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) and junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) put up a fight against Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach before falling 7-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. Junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) lost in the No. 2 match to Lauren Baum and Bianca Jochimsen by an 8-5 margin. In the No. 3 match, senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) were topped by Rocio Frej and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-3.
In singles play, Prishlyak fell to Megale in the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-0. Shortly after, Lotto was defeated by Frej in the No. 6 match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 1 spot, Mical was topped by Thongdach, the nation's No. 104 singles player, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) followed in the No. 5 singles match, falling 6-3, 6-0 to Baum. McCarthy jumped out to an early lead by winning her first set, but couldn't hold on to defeat Jochimsen, falling 4-6, 6-4 (12-10) in the No. 3 spot. In the last match of the day, Dohanics fell behind Wlodarczyk early, losing her first set by a 3-6 margin. Dohanics bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set, before falling in the tiebreaker, 9-11.
The Nittany Lions will be on the road next for two matches in Huntingtown, W.Va. The team will face South Alabama Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m., followed by a match up with Marshall Sunday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. The Lions return to Happy Valley for a home match against Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m.
