UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 19, 2009-- On the first day of competition Penn State is first in the men's overall team standings. With a total of 61 victories on the day the Nittany Lions remain five victories ahead of Ohio State. Penn State came up with a total of 24 victories in sabre, 23 victories in foil, and 14 victories in epee. Tomorrow the final day of men's competition will decide who the champions will be.
Daniel Bak (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) finished second in men's sabre behind Ohio State's Mike Momtselidze. Bak had 12 victories on the day. Finishing out the top four was freshman Aleksander Ochocki (Clark, N.J.). He had 12 victories on the day as well.
The Nittany Lions men's foil division finished second and third after Notre Dame's Gerek Meinhardt who finished first with 13 wins. Freshman Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished second and Junior Nick Chinman (Boulder, Colo.) finished third. Chamley-Watson finished with 12 victories and Chinman finished with 11.
In epee, senior James Moody (Denver, Colo.) finished seventh with eight victories and junior Maxwell Dettlinger (Louisville, Ky.) finished 17th with six victories.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. with rounds 5-7 of each weapon taking place. The gold medal bout will take place at 2 p.m.
