UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 38 Indiana Hoosiers topped the Penn State women's tennis team today, 6-1. Senior Dorothy Dohanics (Pittsburgh, Pa.) grabbed a point for the Nittany Lions with a win in No. 4 singles.
The Hoosiers (13-7, 3-4 Big Ten) took an early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition. Indiana moved ahead 3-0 with two consecutive singles wins before Penn State (5-14, 2-5 Big Ten) moved within two after Dohanics' victory. The Hoosiers came out on top in the remaining singles bouts to walk away with the 6-1 win.
In doubles play, Maria Gueirreiro and Katya Zapadalova handed junior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland) an 8-2 loss on the No. 1 doubles court. Sigrid Fischer and Charlotte Martin clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers by defeating junior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) in second doubles, 8-3. The senior tandem of Dohanics and Leyla Morzan (Vancouver, British Columbia) hung with Myriam Sopel and Lindsey Stuckey throughout the No. 3 bout but were edged in the tiebreaker, 8-7(2).
The match moved into singles play with Indiana leading 1-0. On the No. 2 court, Martin defeated Mical in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 to put Indiana ahead 2-0. Following in sixth singles, freshman Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) fell to Sopel, 6-3, 6-3. With Indiana leading 3-0, Dohanics handed Fischer a 6-4, 6-4 loss in the No. 4 bout, giving Penn State its first point of the night.
Following on the No. 5 court, Morzan fell to Stuckey, 6-2, 6-1. Alba Berdala took an early lead in No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win over Zobeideh in the first set. Zobeideh came out hard in the second set but fell by a narrow 7-5 margin. With Indiana ahead 5-1, McCarthy battled with Zapadalova in first singles. McCarthy won the first set, 7-5. Zapadalova answered with a 6-3 win in the second, forcing the match into three sets. McCarthy put up a fight, but Zapadalova came away with the 7-5 win.
The Nittany Lions play their final home match of the season Sunday against No. 36 Illinois at 11 a.m. Morzan and Dohanics will be honored during Senior Day ceremonies before play begins. Weather permitting; the match will be played outdoors at the Sarni Tennis Center off of Bigler Road. Admission to all Penn State home matches is free. The Lions are back on the road next weekend to face Wisconsin on Saturday, April 18 at noon, followed by Northwestern on Sunday, April 19 at noon.
