Nittany Lions Stampede the Bison, Knock off the Huskies in Tennis

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team got back on track Wednesday, defeating the Bucknell Bison and the Bloomsburg Huskies. Penn State won both matches, 7-0, and outscored its opponents in games, 191-40.

Penn State improves to 12-11, and will head into this weekend with a key pair of Big Ten matches. The Lions will host the 30th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Sarni Tennis Center. Penn State closes the regular season with the No. 44 Northwestern Wildcats coming to town Sunday at 10 a.m. The Big Ten Championships begin on April 23.

Penn State vs. Bucknell

Penn State came out and won the doubles point to garner the early 1-0 lead. Following the strong doubles play, the Nittany Lions cranked out victories in all six singles bouts to win the match, 7-0.

In doubles action, junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) teamed up and faced Bucknell's Mark Malloy and Jonathan Brenner. The Nittany Lion tandem jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back, winning their match, 8-1.

In the No. 2 bout, senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac), Md. and junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) took on Daniel Bednarek and Greg Maxson. The Penn State duo won the match, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point. With the point already decided, senior Adam Slagter (Austin, Texas) and freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) defeated Ryan Sandburg and Anton Kovic, 8-4.

With Penn State leading 1-0, the match moved on to singles action. Bourchier played in the No. 4 position and dominated Brenner winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Following Bourchier's victory, Slagter led 4-3 in the first set, but won the final two games over Kovic. In the second set, Slagter ran away with a 6-1 victory to win the match and gave Penn State a 3-0 lead.

The match was clinched in the No. 1 bout. Lynch took on Sandburg. After winning the first set 6-2, Lynch swept the second set, 6-0 to clinch the match for Penn State.

With the match already decided, Lee improved to 11-10 on the season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Malloy. St-Maurice had an impressive victory as he downed Bednarek in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) finished off the match for Penn State as he defeated Clark Bogle, 6-1, 6-0.

Penn State vs. Bloomsburg

Penn State came out to win the first two doubles matches and eventually the third in a tiebreaker to gain the 1-0 advantage on the Huskies. The Lions then went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets to lock another 7-0 victory on the day.

In doubles action, Slagter and Lee faced Fernando Perez and Ryan Glubo. The teams kept exchanging games and were tied at four. However, the Nittany Lion duo won the final four games to win their match. In the No. 3 bout, sophomores Benji Kendall (Villanova, Pa.) and Jamie Cox (Acworth, Ga.) jumped out to a 4-1 lead on Jeff Nuhfer and Alan Hummel. The tandem ended up winning the match, 8-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Lions.

With the doubles point already decided, Bourchier and Gormley won their match in a tiebreaker over Lee Wexler and Mark Schroeder, 7-6 (7-3).

Penn State took a 1-0 lead into singles competition. Lynch earned the second point of the match for the Nittany Lions in his 6-0, 6-1 victory over Perez. Hasyn played in the No. 3 bout and earned his second win of the day as he defeated Nuhfer in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0. Penn State had a 3-0 lead over the Huskies.

The match was clinched in the No. 2 matchup of St-Maurice and Wexler. After breezing away with a 6-0 first set win, St-Maurice had no problem in the second set, winning 6-1. Gormley picked up a singles point for Penn State on court No. 4, as he defeated Schroeder in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

Cox saw action in singles, playing in the No. 5 matchup with Glubo. The sophomore downed Glubo, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Kendall finished the match for the Nittany Lions in the No. 6 bout, as he defeated Hummel, 6-2, 6-0.
