UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - - Penn State men's tennis assistant coach Dan Holman will be leaving the program after four successful seasons. Holman has accepted a new position at Westport Club in Denver, N.C. He will serve as the Director of Tennis.
"I just want to take this opportunity and thank Penn State for giving me this opportunity to coach here at this great university," said Holman. "I am very proud of what the team was able to accomplish during my time here and I will never forget it. I also want to thank Todd Doebler for giving me a chance, and I wish him and the team nothing but success in the future."
In May of 2008, Holman was recognized as the ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. During his time with Penn State, he played an integral role in all aspects of the Penn State men's tennis program. In his four seasons, Holman's influence was instrumental in the program's accomplishments on and off the court.
"It is hard to see Coach Holman leave us after all he has done for the program both on and off the court but he is leaving for a great opportunity," said Doebler. "The families and kids at the Westport Club will be very fortunate to have him as their director of tennis. I have no doubt he will do an outstanding job but he will be missed here at Penn State."
He helped Doebler lead the Nittany Lions to one of the program's elite seasons in 2008, which included a 16-12 overall record, a tied program-best 6-4 mark in the Big Ten and the program's first-ever victory in the NCAA Championship in the modern era. The Lions also finished 38th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) final national rankings, which is a program-best.
Holman, a native of Atlanta, Ga., joined the Penn State men's tennis staff in January 2006, one year after graduating from the a five day course by the USA Tennis High Performance Coaching Program in Key Biscayne, Fla.
He is certified with the United States Professional Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry. Prior to Penn State, Homan served as Director of Advanced Juniors for two and a half seasons at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, N.C.
Holman earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Appalachian State University in May of 2001. He excelled as a collegian for the Mountaineers. He earned All-Southern Conference honors in 2001 for his doubles play. He slotted in at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles in his career at Appalachian State.
