With the conclusion of the first round of the Northeast Regionals Penn State stands tied for eleventh at 35-over par. The Nittany Lions stand 23 shots behind the first place team, No. 20 Tennessee. Penn State and No. 47 Coastal Carolina both shot rounds of 319 to edge Sacred Heart and Columbia University with the premier 18 holes.
Junior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) leads Penn State tied for 23rd at six-over par, 77. Howe is just six strokes behind tournament leader, Darren Renwick of Tennessee. Freshman Nick Archambault (QC, Canada) is close behind Howe with an eighth place seat at eight-over par, 79. Archambault carded a 37th place finish with his final nine holes shot at even par, sinking two birdies. Junior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) tied for 50th place at 10-over par, 81.
Senior Chad Bricker (Waynesboro, Pa.) and junior Kevin Foley (Sommerville, N.J.) both finished at 11-over par, tying at 55 with the conclusion of 18.
"We were not able to overcome high winds and the difficult golf course like the teams at the top of the field," said head coach Greg Nye. "It was a tough day for us."
