Nine Nittany Lions Compete at U.S. Swimming Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.; July 16, 2009 -- The Penn State men's and women's swimming teams were well represented at the 2009 Conoco Phillips U.S. Swimming Championships at Indianapolis last week. Altogether, nine Nittany Lions competed in the event.

The top performance was by former All-American Kelly Nelson who swam to 10th place in the 200m butterfly. Her time of 2:12.25 saw her narrowly miss qualifying for the finals in the event. She also placed 35th in the 200m freestyle (2:02.45).

Other performances on the women's side saw Lindsey DeForrest, Michelle Myers and Stephanie Roop compete in the Championships. Myers competed in three events: 100m backstroke (27th/1:03.39), 200m backstroke (30th/2:16.88) and 50m freestyle (73rd/27.10).

DeForrest was 28th in the 50m freestyle in a time of 26.17, while Roop competed in the 800m freestyle, finishing 49th (9:02.46).

On the men's side, five Nittany Lions saw time in the pool with the best showing coming from Dan Fimbianti in the 200m backstroke. Fimbianti swam a time of 2:02.78 for 18th place, while also placing 29th in the 100m back (57.30).

Mitch Scherer impressed as he touched the wall in 24th place in a time of 1:04.31 in his premier event, the 100m breaststroke.

Brian Alden and Scott Marino did double duty, both part taking in two events at the competition. Alden was a 28th and 36th place finisher in the 100m freestyle (50.24) and 100m breaststroke (1:06.91), respectively. Marino swam to 27th in the 50m free (23.05) and 38th in the 400m IM (4:33.71).

Matt Cox wrapped up competition for the Lions with a 48th place showing in the 400m IM. He finished in a time of 4:42.02.
