UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Aug. 26, 2009 - Former Penn State standouts Jamelle Cornley (Columbus, Ohio) and Stanley Pringle (Virginia Beach, Va.) have signed contracts to continue their basketball careers professionally in Europe.
The two senior standouts from last season's school-record 27-win and 2009 NIT Championship team join 15 former Nittany Lions that played professionally in Europe or the NBA last season.
Cornley will continue his career with Club BC Dnipro in Dnepropetrosk, Ukraine. Dnipro plays in the Ukraine-Superleague and was led in scoring last season by Devin Green (17.0 ppg), formerly of Hampton University and currently a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Patrick Beverly (16.7 ppg) formerly of Arkansas. Dnepropetrosk is Ukraine's third largest city with 1.8 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. It is located on the Dnieper River west of the Russian border and north of the Black Sea. Founded as a fortified town in the mid 16th century, Dnepropetrosk is a major European industrial center and played a key role in the Cold War nuclear arms race and space development in the former Soviet Union.
The MVP of the 2009 NIT, Cornley finished his Penn State career fourth on the Nittany Lions scoring (1,579) and rebounding (755) lists. He earned team co-MVP honors last season after averaging 14.4 ppg and 6.3 rpg despite playing the last several weeks of the season with a partially dislocated left shoulder. He underwent surgery to repair the shoulder at the conclusion of the season and returned to playing basketball in late July.
Pringle has signed to play with the Passe-Partout Leuven Bears of the Belgium D1 League. Located in northern Belgium just east of Brussels, Leuven is the home of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewing group and one of the top five largest consumer goods companies in the world. Founded around 891, the city is home to around 90,000 inhabitants. The Bears were led by JJ Miller (16.2 ppg), formerly of North Carolina A&T, and former Quinnipiac player DeMario Anderson (12. 6 ppg) last season.
Pringle led the Big Ten shooting 45.3 percent from three last season while making 72 threes and ranking third on the team averaging 12.8 ppg. Pringle logged 685 points (10.1 ppg), 174 assists (2.6 apg) and 78 steals in two seasons at Penn State.
Both Cornley and Pringle have earned their degrees from Penn State.
