UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team had an excellent performance on day two of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational. The Nittany Lions will be playing for up to four championships tomorrow afternoon.
In Flight "A" doubles action, sophomore Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) advanced to the finals of their bracket, as they defeated Cornell's Mirza Klis and Johnathan Jaklitsch, 8-3. With the victory, Bourchier and Lee will face Jeremy Feldman and Andy Gauthier of Cornell tomorrow.
The Lions were dominant in Flight "B" doubles as well, as senior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) and sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) advanced to the finals with an 8-2 win over Derek Wallensteen and Mike Lampa of St. John's.
In Flight "A" singles, senior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Cornell's Jonathan Jaklitsch, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to advance to third round of the flight. At the same time, Bourchier won his match over Milo Hauk as he retired. With the two winning, Gormley and Bourchier squared-off in the third round. Gormley downed Bourchier 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals tomorrow. Also in Flight "A", Lee earned two wins in the consolation bracket as he downed Ravi Yegya -Raman of Princeton, 6-2, 6-1 and Jeremy Feldman of Cornell, 6-1, 6-2.
After a nice victory in Flight "B" singles yesterday, Cohen faced a tough defeat to Yale's John Huang, 6-1, 6-4. Additionally, freshmen Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and Warren Hardie (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) had difficult losses in the Flight "B" singles.
After their setbacks yesterday, St-Maurice and freshman C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) each earned two victories apiece in the Flight "C" consolation bracket. St-Maurice defeated Buffalo's Kirl Kolomyts in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, followed by another straight-set win St. John's Michael Lampa, 6-4, 6-0. Griffin earned his victories over Binghamton's Evan Algier, 6-3, 6-0 and Penn's Mark Millbrandt, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0. Griffin and St-Maurice will play each other tomorrow in the consolation final.
In the Flight "D" consolation bracket, freshman Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) picked up two wins as well. In his first match, Chen downed Charles Quay (Cornell), 6-4, 6-4. In his second match, Chen won on a retirement as he defeated Binghamton's Rafael Rodrigues. Chen was leading 2-1 when Rodrigues retired. Following competition at Princeton, Penn State will be off for a month before heading to Norfolk, Va. for the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 23. The Big Ten Singles Tournament is slated for Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in East Lansing, Mich.
